paiyyada (rAga: nadanAmakriyA, tALa: tripuTa)
This is a recitals on M.S. Subbulakshmi's Radio Recitals CD
Also, I might not have the translation right - I'm not sure if it is paiyyada or paiyyadA

Interesting. Is ayyayyo used here same as in Tamil for consternation?

S-P, this is what I have. I am not sure about the spelling. Some of them don't match what MSS sings. The imagination in this song is out of this world! 8)

Re: Lyrics & Meaning of paiyyadA of Kshetrayya
A couple of corrections:
The word in the pallavi is."vegaTAye"
"vegaTu" is"nauseous"
In the second line of c1 the word"sannja" is "sanja" [evening]
In the third line of c2 the word "badari" and "saya" are "bedari" and "Shayya"
"bedari" is "scared" and "Shayya" is "bed"

Thanks, Smt. Savitri, received. E-S - thanks again for the translation, are all Kshetrayya's compositions on the lovelorn theme?

Re: Lyrics & Meaning of paiyyadA of Kshetrayya
Yes, S-P, he is part of the trinity of composers of padams (also called erotic love poetry by the people who make a literary career out of studying these). Sri annamAcArya, who wrote many songs describing very explicitly the love between his Lord of the seven hills and the young (taruNi, to use his own words) alamElumangA, is the temple poet of this trio. Sri sArangapANi whose coarse compositions are set in a courtesan's boudoir for the most part was at the other end of the spectrum. Sri kshEtrayyA falls in between, with very subtle and refined poetry describing carnal love between Lord muvvagOpAlA and a mortal courtesan. AFAIK, both Sri kshEtrayyA and Sri sArangapANi penned compositions in only this genre, unlike Sri annamAcArya, whose compositions spanned the gamut - from the intensely religious to the overtly carnal.

Re: Lyrics & Meaning of paiyyadA of Kshetrayya
ES-:) that was Smt Savitri sayingg Ayyayyo what can I say (Enna solven) - on my request for her own translation - since she considers this xxx-rated she asked me to check my email
Coming to Kshetrayya, I'm not sure it is very subtle or very refined. As explicit as Jayadeva I'd say seeing C2. But some others discussed on rasikas, don't recall composer, have been more graphic, anatomy and stark lust descriptors although when it is at the Divine level - the expressions of an amorous nature are sublime, an absorbing ultimate love, than merely "carnal". Some padams are just banal and coarse with neither subtlety or finesse.

Re: Lyrics & Meaning of paiyyadA of Kshetrayya
Thanks aaaaabbbbb,S-P.
S-P, I think those discussions might have been regarding compositions by vaideeshwarankOyil subbarAma aiyyar, (http://www.karnatik.com/co1056.shtml). Also that one Behag composition by Patnam was roundly trashed by many.
I thnk Kshetrayya's padams are intimate and not vulgar (based on the translations of the few songs that I have). Jayadeva was more explicit but couched his expressions in exquisite language. We seem to be more conservative than 12th and 16th centuries. (a sweeping statement?)

Re: Lyrics & Meaning of paiyyadA of Kshetrayya
Thank you for general translation but I was wondering if anyone could post word for word translation/meaning if they have it for this padam please? It would be very helpful while setting a padam to know which word corresponds to which meaning/translation. Thank you
