Saraswati Vandana??

Post by ardhanariswar »

Hey all,

Can someone please tell me the name of this piece?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0kn3bKf1pn4

The title says Saraswati Vandana, but I looked up the lyrics and only came up with the "Yaa Kundendu tushaara haara-dhavalaa...." which seems to differ from the song in the video. Can anyone clarify? And if possible supply the lyrics/ragam info of the song in the video?

Thanks, much appreciated!

Ardhanrishwar - you bring up a good point - youtube is full of clips (claiming to be bharatanatyam, bharatnatyam, bharathanatyam, baratanatyam, and baratanattiyam), that are very poorly labeled (some incorrectly as well)...I am not going into the quality of the clips.

Anyway, this one is SRngapurAdhISvari SAradE - on the SAradAmbA in SRngEri - while SAradA is a name used to describe saravati, I think the SAradAmbA in SRngEri is a manifestation of pArvati...others can correct me if I am wrong.

BTW, yAkundEndu tushAra hAra dhavaLA is a prayer to sarasvati (sA mAm pAtu sarasvati bhagavati...)...

This is very interesting, I never heard this before, always thought Sarada referred to Saraswathi. For what it's worth, the wikipedia page
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shringeri_ ... mba_Temple says "Primary deity: Sharada (Saraswati)" but the phrase "shankara sannuta shrIpadmacaraNE" in the lyric supports your interpretation. However, the rest of the lyric sounds like it should refer to Saraswathi "sakalakalA vishAradE", "sapta svara supUjitE",
"kAvyagAna kalA svarUpiNi".

I can't look at youtube here at work, but how did the dancers interpret this - Saraswathi or Parvathi?

The piece is in praise of Sri Saraswati. "Shankara" refers to the acharya and "Sripadmacharane" is the mudra of the composer (AV Krishnamachar aka Padmacharan).

Ah, that clarifies it - I did not realize that Sripadmacharane is the mudra. Thank you very much!
