I've always wondered why it is not played in the South.

it will never be displaced now, of course, and yes, I love carnatic violin too.

It is a shame, though, that the sarangi never got a chance. I thought that before --- and even more after reading the article.

I have read that sarangi was indeed used in Tamilnadu, in temples. When the oduvars sang the Tevaram after the puja, the sarangi would be played along with it as accompaniment. It was only in the 19th century that the violin displaced the sarangi because violin was easier to handle. The centuries old practice of learning and playing the sarangi was discontinued even in Oduvar families becasue of the advent of the violin.

Is the Dilruba the same instrument as Sarangi?
Found video clips of Anagamali Jose playing the dilruba: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vjubq37F2UU
