Translation of the caraNams usually sung, and corrections to the sAhityam based on the gold-standard rendition of Dr. S. Ramanathan.
Lji - are there other examples where Sri GKB embeds the rAgamudra in the kRti? (SivakAmasundari in jaganmOhini is another I know of)
pallavi
(y)Arukkut-tAn teriyum avar mahimai ambala nATakam ADiya perumai

Who is the person (ArukkutAn) who knows/understands (teriyum) his (avar) greatness (mahimai)? Understands the grandeur (perumai) of how he danced (ADiya) the divine, cosmic (ambala) dance (nATakam) [1]?

anupallavi
pArukkuL mAndargaL kANbadum tollai patanjali paNNiya puNNiya ellai (ArukkutAn teriyum...)
All that humankind (mAndargaL) sees (kANbadum) in this world (pArukkuL) is trouble (tollai), (so who is the person who is capable of understanding the greatness of the lord's dance) that was so virtuously (puNNiya) encapsulated/captured/circumscribed (paNNiya ellai) by patanjali?

caraNam 2
dEvargaL pU-mazhai koNDu shorindAr siddha vidyAdharar kaNDu magizhndAr
pAvalar nAvalar uLLam negizhndAr pArvati ammanum kUDa irundAr

(Who is capable of understanding the greatness and grandeur of the Lord's dance) as the gods (dEvargaL) showered (koNDu SorindAr) torrents (mazhai) of flowers (pU), while mystics (siddha) [2] and supernatural attendants of Siva (vidyadharar) rejoiced (magizhndAr) upon beholding (kaNDu) him, and the hearts (uLlam) of poets (pAvalar) and orators (nAvalar) melted in love (nigizhndAr), and the goddess (ammanum) pArvati (pArvati) was (irundAr) also with (kUDa) him?

caraNam 3
bAlakrSNan paNindETTum pratApam pagarndiDumpErk-killai puNNiya pApam
shIla guNamaruvum jnAnap-pradIpam dEvamanOharamAgiya [3] rUpam (ArukkutAn teriyum...)

(Who is capable of understanding the greatness and grandeur of the Lord's dance), the majestic splendor (pratApam) that
1) is worshipped (paNindu) and praised (ETTum) by the composer, gOpAlakRSNa bhArati (bAlakRSNan)?
2) negates (illai) all deeds, both virtuous (puNNiyam) and sinful (pApam) [1], for those that share this vision (pagarndiDumpErukku)?
3) is the light (pradIpam) of knowledge/wisdom (jnAna) that is united with (maruvum) both virtuous conduct (SIla) and virtuous character (guNam), the form (Agiya rUpam) that delights (manoharam) the gods (dEva)?

FOOTNOTES
[1] nATakam traditionally means a 'drama', but in this context refers to the tANDavam (mythically, nATakam was a play where the actors, naTas and naTis acted, danced and sang)
[2] siddhas are mystics who've attained the eight siddhis
[3] rAga mudra

ravishankar: There are at least 50 songs where he has used either gOpAlakrSNan or bAlakrSNan as the mudra. Do you want me to generate a list for you?

Ravi, thanks for that translation. But you missed the second charaNam, the one beginning "kAdil kuzhaiyadu vizhundadu..."

Is this song about Lord Shiva?

I meant the rAgamudra - it is not usual to find that...he has used it here, and in the jaganmohini kRti that I am aware of. I was wondering if he's used it in others as well.

As with the other caraNams, it is always helpful to hear it sung. This was not sung by Dr. Ramanathan. That is why I left it out.

I found one rendition by S. Sowmya here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BnDRAmZlkGw
However, I could not recognize the words between the pallavi and the 3rd charanam so I'm not sure if it included the 2nd charanam or not.
I could not find any other version at this time. I will keep looking though.
