In a line-up of 3 strong artistes, I felt for Unni coming in on Day3. But he showed his professionalism and put his own stamp on the evening. Even the varnam, Era Napai presented by him was different to R-G as was Rama Rama, Rama Seetha in Misra Tilang. It had its own charm listening to it again in the space of 2 days in Unni's golden voice. That is the beauty of CM as it does give room for individual presentation and manodharmam.
The 3 main pieces he chose were Mayamalavagaulai, Shanmukhapriya and Bhairavi. All 3 were extensively delineated in Ragam, neraval and swaram. His forays were like a gentle breeze which soothed all present. Bahudari alapana was poetic but the surprise was the brisk swarams he sang at 'Padmanabha' in the charanam of Bogindra. The halls were packed with the regulars in the community plus many outsiders and some Westerners. His fame as playback singer overtook the evening as many waited impatiently for him to finish the 'heavy' side. Eventually, the President did go up to him and requested him to take the huge list of audience request. He graciously agreed to leave out the RTP and sang some lilting numbers including Kakai Chiraginiley, Eppo Varuvaro etc as the audience clapped along where they could.
It was a fitting finale to 3 days of music-Sangeetotsavam - with student concerts in the morning.
