Varnam Composer

Post by preyas »

I came across a varnam

Karunai Seidu nay Kan Parthu Arul Vaiyae Karpagame Thaye Thiru Mylapoori Valar

This is in Natakurinji Adi

I was trying to find who composed this varnam. Any ideas.

If it is the pada varnam: Karunai ni sheyya vendum then it is by K.N.Dandayudapani Pillai

That is what I originally thought. The lyrics for the pallavi line for Guru Dandayudapani Pillai is

karuNai nI sheyya vENDumE idu samayam kanaka sabhaiyil tiru naTamiDum paranE

The one for the one I saw is different - it has karpagame. It seems be on Devi.

I was just told that it is a Madurai Muralidaran composition.

Did you hear this in a dance programme? Who was the performer?

I had heard the song in a CD on Varnams. I was not sure if this was a Sivan composition as it was on Karpagama. I presumed it was on Mylapore Devi. It did not look like any of his varnams. Then I got feedback from a legitimate source that Muralidaran had told that it was his to him. I have not seen this song danced yet. I am sure someone shall.

Muralidaran does indeed have a varnam on Goddess Karpakambal, and IIRC, it is in Nattakurinji. It is on his Nrityopasana series but I will have to confirm (don't have the tapes with me at school).

Layamusic has compiled a number of CD in MP3 format (2 for varnam 1 for kavuthuvam). They have recycled the ones which was in the Nrityopasana series and put them out as one CD.

Here is the URL for the one I am taking about.
