TM Krishna
Vittal Ramamurthy
Balaji
Sai subramaniam

1. Sujana Jeevana- Kamaas. Neraval and Swaram @ Charunetra SrikaLatra
2. Alamelu manga neevu abhinava roopamu- Bhairavi-Annamacharya- Ragam.
3. Balakrishnam Bhavayami- Gopikavasantham- MD(obviously I noted down the name of raga when announced!!)
4. Venkatesa Ninnu Sevimpanu- Madhyamavathi- Thy- Ragam, swaram.
5. Manasa sancharare- shyama
6. Ragamalikai virutham of Kulasekhara alwar's -OOneru selvathu?- followed by Tirupathi venkata ramana- sindhubhairavi- PDasa.

TMK is undoubtedly one of the best singers today. We may or may not like his behaviour in general. But he is definitely superb in his presentation. Best I liked was the neraval and swaram of kamaas. Also madhyamavathi swaram was brilliant.(There was an apaswaram on one occasion, of course very much excusable)

Interesting green and gold interwoven embroidered kurta and an all round growth of facial hair ( a bit more above the upper lip).

Vioin was a good match. Our Balaji and morsing gave good support. Balaji got several Bales from TMK. Very understanding and anticipating accompaniment.

Why the videographers overlap pictures from different cameras so frequently blurring the screen completely, is only known to them. Better if it can be avoided.

A very good concert.

He IS wearing the beautiful curly locks of hair which seems somehow plastered to the top portion of his forehead. He has obviously taken pains to produce the effect. Let us appreciate it. What, after all, is there in a namam :)

Dear friends and music lovers,

Ashwin and I will be singing for the Nada Neerajanam series in Tirupati on January 3, 2011 at 6:00 p.m. IST. The concert will be broadcast live on Shri Venkateswara Bhakti Channel (SVBC). We would be very honoured if you could tune into the SVBC channel or watch the concert online at http://www.yupptv.com/svbc_channel_live.html.

My wife just called me to see some music on the TV, after which she changed to this channel where an elderly lady was singing. I wondered if it might be... and Sushi was quite unable to help with any Telugu script... but, eventually, it came up in English and it was... Parassala Ponnammal.

Quick note to let everybody know that it is very easy to watch SVBC live in US now.

TeluguTV.net is streaming both SVBC and Bhakthi TV through a Roku box. Roku box for those who are not aware is a streaming device that lets you bring streaming video from internet to TV. It has a wireless / wired connection to internet and a video (Composite/ Component/ HDMI) connection to TV.

Roku primarily started as a device to watch Netflix on TV. Now it has hundreds of channels which you can add. One of them is TeluguTV.net and is completely free as of now at least. Once you add the TeluguTV.net channel, you have two options to watch SVBC.

a) 24/7 live
b) US /CST time-shifed channel to watch the same program in Time-shift mode.

Nada Nirajanam that happens from ~6:15 PM - 7:30PM IST falls around 7:45 AM - 9:00 AM in Eastern US time. So it is very convenient to watch while getting ready to go to work.

As a sidenote there are also lot of Indian IPTV channels. I do not know how good the quality of these Indian shows though.

Today was a lady by name Pustaka Rama. Plenty of Purandaradasa kritis. Brahmam Okkatte, etc., Not too bad. Cannot imagine how it would be to sit thro' her full concert. I think it should be OK. Good powerful voice. The violinist is from Bangalore. Is she also from Karnataka?

Today I listened to Sri. P.Ganesh's Chitraveena concert. I was very much impressed.
Mys Srikanth- Violin
Thaanjavur Murugabhoopathi- Mridangam
Udupi Balakrishnan-Ghatam

1. Varnam -Kapi- By Ravikiran
2. Theretheeyakaraadaa- Gowlibandu
3. Sadhinchane-Arabhi
4. Garuda Gamana Samayamidhe- Nagaswaravali
5. Ninne nammithinayya- Simhendra madhyamam- R,N,S
6. Thani
7. Narayanate NamoNamo- Behag.
The channel got frozen here. It must just have been a couple of more songs from now on.

Ideal concert listening experience for couch potatoes like me :D

In my opinion this young man is extremely talented. There was not even a trace of pisuru anywhere during the programme. Perfect landings every time- the way you would expect from a specialist.

In every field we have to accept the place and time of our birth, lucky in some ways and not so much in other respects. It is obvious that growing along with Ravikiran, the giant performer, people like Ganesh go unnoticed. But he has at the same time got the opportunity to learn from a master like RK. Now with RK having exhausted all the standard kacheri patterns and moving on to more innovations, good artists like Ganesh can readily fill up the gap for good traditional satisfactory CM.

IMO, the carnatika Brothers experiment has also not helped Ganesh very much. Although he is obviously the better of the two, being more talkative gives the other person, Shashikiran (?) an undeserved predominance. The combination, at least in my case, has an immediate effect of moving away from the performance due to the continuous fluttering flag hand movement of the kiran.

It will be nice if Ganesh would continue pursuing his solo chitraveena performances. He is undoubtedly very good at it.

The accompanying artists were also excellent and the concert was very enjoyable.

Yes Ganesh's was a wonderful performance. Believe it or not, exactly the same thoughts as you have written came to me today during and at the end of concert.

The song after Behag was Bhagyada Laxmi Baramma in Madhyamavathi.

The earlier day, what stayed with me was Pusthakam Rama's powerful voice.

What I am extremely impressed about the Nada Nirajanam is that we get to know about wide variety of artistes, many of whom we might never come to know otherwise. They make no distinction on the basis of senior or junior artiste, popular or oridnary performer. And each one of them get the same stage, same slot and same duration. They have been able to host a performace on each day of the year as far as I know. The duration is just right for me to catch up on every day amdist everyday schedule.

Ganesh used to perform on the chithraveena with Ravikiran as the duo "Asia Brothers".

The requirement is that the performers must be rated at A-Grade by All India Radio.

When you say "senior or junior artiste", agewise you may be correct but ability-wise it merely shows the wide disparity in grading artistes by different AIR stations. An A-Grade from Delhi in Carnatic music is not the same as an A-Grade from Chennai but is treated as the same.

AIR will make the claim that all auditions are anonymous and sent off to some central location. If that is the case, musicians in Chennai would not be going to Trichy for their auditions.

An A-Grade vocalist from Bangalore was panned for her performance on Nada Neerajanam just a few weeks back. Nope, I am not going to name names but you can look it up yourself. ;)

In August/September(?) 2010 Nada Neerajanam completed one year of daily broadcasts. Now they have added Nama Sankeerthanam also to the mix.

Can anyone help as to where is the monthly/weekly schedule for this program is published? I was desparately searching google and the SVBC site several occasions to get the schedule to plan for the hearing depending upon when carnatic music is performed. Not able to locate a link that gives the relevant information. In fact Radha Baskar of Mudra used to publish in their website and SAMUDRA magazine which however is not happening for the past few months.

Ganesh is no doubt a very talented, fantasic musician...
In this review of his chitra vina concert, I don't quite understand where and why arises the comparison between the brothers...In fact IMO, Ganesh has been known to the world only after singing as the "CARNATICA BROTHERS". This has also not Stopped him from performing Chitra vina concerts.

If being talkative gave a person more prominence, then the CM field would have a million more (so-called) singers and all of them could be popular too:) !!!(Going by the popularity Shashikiran has....)

I thought kucheris were held to come over and LISTEN to the music... and not to SEE the MUSICIANS... A bad throat or an off-pitch singing, as a disturbance can be justified... Stating one of the brothers' hand movement as a reason to move away from the concert sounds very flimsy and illogical according to me. If a movement on stage is considered as a reason to walk out of the performance, then probably we cant listen to carnatic music-live performances anymore !!!

On 5th April 2011, there was the concert of Vidushi S.Sowmya. Embar Kannan-Violin, (Poonkulam?) S. Subramanian- Mridangam, KV Gopalakrishnan-Khanjira

1. Terateeyaka Raada- Gowlibandu
2. Sri Venkata Gireesam- Suruti. Brief Alapana.
3. Lalitha ragam. Very good (better) reply by violin, followed by Hiranmayeem Lakshmi. Neraval at Sangeetha Vadya vinodhini.
4. Rama (Not Raama) ramana raa raa- Sankarabharanam was main. Although this ragam is not my heartthrob, it was presented in a very enjoyable way. Instead of the usual lengthy grind, there were many sharp usages,(I guess by skipping some intermediate swaras) and produced the beauty normally associated with asampoorna ragas. There was swaram- No neraval.
5. Thani. The mridangam was brilliant. Right from the beginning of the concert, the crystal clear sharp beats greatly enhanced the listening experience. Sounded very much UKS ish. By any chance his sishya? Also, khanjira could produce a distinguishable tonal quality. It was very pleasant.
6. A bhajan type number- Govinda srita Gokula brinda. Something close to Madhuvanthi but not the same was our conclusion! The few Tirumala devotees who were present enjoyed the bhajan.
7. Brief ragam of Yamunakalyani with Bhavayami Gopalapaalam. Normally difficult to sing as you always compare with MS's rendition. But SS sang this well. Besides the rolling briga of MS, she also offerd some new sangatis.
8. Muthugare Yasodha- Kurunji.

In the beginning I felt that the voice was not flowing freely but very soon it came back to the normal beautiful level. Very good concert.

I too listened to this concert of S.Sowmya.Generally a good concert. She could have been more choosy during the neraval @ sangeeta vAdya vinodhini. Some improvisations were not suiting the mood of that song.

kssr,
Your mention of the song Ramaa ramana raa raa - sankarabharanam (not commonly heard in concert circuits) brings to my memory the excellent rendering of the song by (late) K R Kedaranathan in one of the Radio Sangit Sammaelan Concerts many years ago. It was the main kriti of the prog. Sri Karaikudi Mani had rendered a brilliant Tani.

Kedaranathan was among the senior most disciples of Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer. An unassumimg person, he had music of great depth.

So, thanks to Soumya for 'reviving' the kriti!!

Today I listened to the clarionet concert of Sri.Achchi Babu in TTD. It was refreshing and extremely pleasant. The incursions of apaswarams which are normally taken for granted in any Nadaswaram/ clarionet concert were totally absent. Alapanais and swara prastharams were presented with confidence, natural ease and comfort. Quite enjoyable, especially as it came as a surprise from an artist who seems to be not too popular (at least as far as my limited knowledge goes- cannot recall any concert in Bangalore) . Can anyone tell us where he comes from and any other detail about this very good vidwan?

Kota Achi Babu is an A' Grade clarinet player of All India Radio, popular here in the music circles of Hyd.. Yes, his presentations are neat and sweet.. Atleast I have attended a few kucheris and enjoyed thoroughly... True that such artistes are not so well known outside our state, sadly.. they remain obscure like this....Similarly, B.S. Narayanan mama who accompanied him on the violin is again humble and simple.. the disciple of violin maestro T. N. Krishnan, has retired as the staff artiste from AIR, Hyderabad last year (I think)... Their team as a whole is a Listener's delight..

I hope sabhas in Chennai make a note. Who knows? We may get to listen to both of them in December.
I also hope that we hav more nAgasvaram concerts this season so that we get to listen at least to a couple of them. Yes, more of vINA concerts too, of course!

A few days back (23May) we heard AKS Murali's vocal concert. It was a very neatly rendered one. Murali has a very good voice with clear and sruthi bound sancharams in the three octaves. Papanasam Sivan's Venkataramana in Lathangi was the main piece. There was a fair sprinkling of songs by Annamacharya. Can anyone give details about this young vocalist? (I wonder if it is the same A K S Murali, the ghatam player!)

Well, this is a really a good TV channel. Good uninterrupted music for 75 to 90 minutes.

Kunthalavarali: The ghatam player who is also a talented singer is named A.S. Murali; He is the person in this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3NBAW6fGTnc I believe he is a disciple of Sri PSN.

Not sure if there is a different AKS Murali...

When I switched on the channel today, there was Lord Venkateswara on the screen but the veena music was simply flowing with briga sequences arriving effortlessly and with perfection, in raga Poorvikalyani, (my favourite too).

Is it by any chance Veena Gayathri, I thought. Then the camera turned towards the artist. None other than Dr. Jayanthi Kumaresh. What an artist she is. It was excellent music. Main was karaharapriya Samaanamevaru, Rama Nee Samanamevaru... I think she played sometime back at Indira nagar sabha. I did not take serious note. Next concert anywhere in the vicinity, I will not miss. Listening to a full concert is definitely more rewarding. A RTP from this lady. Must be great. Let us see when we get the next chance.

Kanjira was Guruprasanna. I could not identify the mridangam vidwan- though familiar. Both were very understanding and supportive as well.

Amen to all of that. Jayanthi Kumaresh is an incredibly talented and creative vainika. She blends both the Lalgudi and S Balachander styles seamlessly. One of the best concerts I heard last season was her MMA kutcheri. I found her handling of prati-madhyama ragams to be especially adroit.

Dr.Jayanthi Kumaresh's concert yesterday was a treat for the ears to tell the least.

The Bahudhari eduppu itself was full of majesty with a sweet resonance. Her plucking (meettu) is some thing special. The PK was definitely different. The Kharaharapriya stood out in all areas like R &S.Though no niraval at palugu palugu she more than compensated with a lively svara prastharam;the sawal - jawab with mridhnagist R.Ramesh was quite enjoyable. The last piece in BehAg really stimulated one to dance.
The tani by Ramesh & Guruprasanna was full of life.

Today was Sangita Kalanidhis -Bombay Sisters- C Saroja and C Lalitha

My first introduction to them was thro' their Divya Prabhandam cassette. It is a beauty. Lighter version of carnatic music. In Bangalore I have attended a few of their concerts in Fort High School, etc., Not always enjoyable, because their pitch is too high and in their case it is not sweet at that pitch.

Then I came across their recording of Kalyana Samayal - full menu and more of eatables in a clean listing supposed to be in musical form. Extremely amusing. I felt it was unbecoming of senior artists to sing such stuff. I now understand that there are others too who share similar sentiments when reservations were expressed in the Maadu Meykkum Kanna case of another senior artist.

Coming to Nada neerajanam, I do not know what to say. Just speechless! (EDITED) Their voices were hoarse. Their personal friends and relatives should advice them to retire honourably without embarrassing themselves and their rasikas in public. Allow people to remember their good days. I have great respect for their vidwat and definitely no offense meant.

I started listening from the fag end of PantuvarALi.The concert was a quality one for a discerning rasika and a normal rasika who looks for sheer listening pleasure may have some disappointments.Even that is quite subjective.

I not only listened but learned a bit about how to treat a KambOdhi from their yesterday's concert.

It will be better if we rasikas graduate ourselves to listen with certain fervor to learn or imbibe some thing from our (concert) experience. That way a concert will never be boring or an irritation to the ears.My own experience.

kssr: As cienu says, respect for the elders is warranted in this case. I have edited it, hopefully not changing the meaning too much. I listened to them last December and their voice, though not as good as in their prime, was immensely listenable and enjoyable. May be they had a bad day. The respect part is not to extrapolate that one day phenomenon to the extent of advising them not to sing.

There were two other good concerts last week. One by TVG with S Varadarajan and the other by Kadri Gopalnath with A Kanyakumari. Understand that SVBC is to start a separate channel in Tamil from the 8th July.

Still unable to get the monthly programme details of NN. One of our forumites had given an email id. I had requested the info from him; but there was no reply. If someone can find out and post it on this string it will be of great assistance. We will not miss good ones. The earlier one that I heard ( only the first few songs) was of Sankaran Namboodri. He was singing some of MS's thukkadas as the beginning pieces.

Yes. I Agree. I have heard her about 18-20 years back on a brief TV programme. I also have that recording. Today's was also quite impressive, although cannot be called flawless.
Why these artists are not popular outside their home state is strange. I cannot recall even a single instance when she was performing in Bangalore.

Regarding programmens of NN, I have also been trying to find that out but not able to get it anywhere. Like someone said, we will not miss good ones. Ofcourse, some programmes are not at par.
Some time ago, this used to get published in the website and the magazine "Samudhra" of Mudhra. Now a days, no info there also. Also i heard through a known source that sometimes these programmes are decided only on weekly basis and hence advance information is not available. Not sure whether this is actually the case.

Yesterday, on 6 July, there was the top class concert of Smt Alamelu Mani of Bombay. I could not listen from the beginning. The songs I listened

• Sree kanthaneeyeda- Bhavapriya (elaborate swaras in the pallavi)
• Brahmagadigina- Mukhari (Raga alapana and elaborate swaras in the pallavi)
• Venkatasaila-Hameerkalyani (Very good alapana)
• Seethamma Mayamma-Vasantha
• Venkatachalapathe- Karnatakakapi
• Manasuswadheena-Sankarabharanam (Ragam, neraval at Anupallavi and swaras) followed by Thani
• Govindamiha-Bagesree
• Thillana-Hamsanandi

I was hearing this great Guru of Mumbai for the first time. For the sake of rasikas who do not know her, she belongs to the Semmangudi sishya parampara, for her late husband and Guru Chellamani Bhagavathar was disciple of Semmangudi in the TVM Academy. Bombay Sisters also are his disciples. After his very early demise, Smt Alamelu Mani continued her husband’s profession and has trained hundreds of students in Mumbai , many of them have become accomplished singers today. I think, Bombay Jayasree is also one among them. Hariharan, the famous play back singer is her son. The Semmangudi stamp was evident in her singing of swaras for Sreekanthaneeyada, Sankarabharanam alapana, Govindamiha etc. Each song was presented in its pristine form without any unnecessary frills or any face gesticulations. Her straight pose without even shifting her face reminded me of Mani Krishnaswamy. The sangathis were well structured and the raga swaroopam in tact in each sangathi. Her vidwat and practice for many decades was evident in her singing. The one and half hour programme gave the fulfillment of enjoying a three hour concert. One of her disciples also sang with her. Since I did not intend to make a post in rasikas, I did not note down the name of her student or the accompanists. Sorry. She is also famous for singing padams and javalis. I would like to hear her concerts moré often.

CRama,
Though I had heard of her, I first heard her in the Cleveland Festival (via streaming). Yes, we need to hear the veterans more often and I hope this CM friendly channel makes it a point to bring more senior vidvAns and vidUshis. I heard Vedavalli on this channel when I was in India. As remarkable as they are in their own vidvat, their concerts do not draw crowds. If aired on the TV, the attendance gets to be in thousands.

I think the disciple is Mrs.Sarayu Srinivasan. She used to live in Mumbai. I switched on the TV late, hence I did not see the name of the accompanists.
Bombay Jayashri was a student of Smt.T.R.Balamani; am not sure if she learnt from Smt Alamelu Mani.
