pavamAna-Mangalam

After their December concert, this is the first time, Iam listening to their concert. They are reasonably good performers and few outstanding renditions are there in my collection.
But yesterday’s concert was a letdown for me. asAveri varNam started very well and sowrashtram’s beauty marred by mike problems though they managed it very well.
Even a 2 min raga in kamAs could have been rendered better bringing out the nuances of the rAga but HP did not get hold of that fully, MAK, in violin, brought out that. Song was rendered well.
After a simple Hindolam, came Purvikalyani by SP. Surprisingly, her voice was complete let down. It got cracked and she could not reach high notes. Some places -no voice at all. She tried to render the rAga so fast without giving pauses and the beauty of the raga also got lost. HP came to the rescue knowing the danger and completed that Alapana beautifully.
Todi-by HP is superb. Her voice was in full flow and her “sanchArams” were absolute wonder. The only merit of this concert is the rAga and the kriti selection. But violinist was playing too fast. Here also, SP, in neraval, could not command and most of the neralval part is taken by HP.
Keeping the note books by artists is common now a days and except Sanjay, everyone is brining notes. It has been discussed at length here. But for singing karpaga valli nin- the duo referred the note book which was BIG surprise for me (!).
Tukkadas, they repeated the same, which was rendered in half a dozen conerts of their own. No Trinity except Thyagaraja. A performance in MA, with beautiful background decoration by the sponsors, could have been better.
The only redeeming aspects is Patri/BMP’s Tani which was short and good.
