Ravi: Depending on his schedule, I will try to stop by to pay my respects to him sometime soon, before he leaves for India in August. At that time I will try to records some of his thoughts. Once he is in India, I am sure there will be many reports in the mainstream media.

And yes Uday is quite right, Viswa sir got the award in '88.

Let me convey my happiness and congrats to Prof Trichy Sankaran - I was his contemporary @ Vivekananda College 1961-64 batch; I was doing Maths while Sankaran was doing Economics and TV Sankaranarayanan was doing Commerce. I still remember Sankaran playing for Madurai Mani Iyer @ a Rama Navami Concert and appearing for University exam. next morning. .... R. Narayanan

A bit disappointed about Trichur V Ramachandran being ignored this year as well, who in my opinion should be in the TVS/TNS club of awardees.

Bit more Patience till next year. May be next year Trichur Ramachandran may get it.Vocalist and Violinst/Percussionist generally rotate year after year.

I just heard from Neela (Gnaanam) Ramgopal. She's touched by your blessings. She says: of course, I remember him. He's my mother's cousin. When at first I told her about you, I did not have a clue as to how you were related. Once you explained it to me and I informed her, she knew you straight away. 'We haven't met in a long while', she says. No wonder, your living in the US all these years...If Punarvasu happens to be in Chennai during the season, they can meet!

I am doubly happy. Tiruchy Sankaran with his vidvat (and with his being a Canadian neighbor) and vidUshi Neela Ramgopal, a special friend. Rama Ravi in the list makes it even better...

Trichy Sankaran sir is someone whose artistry I admire... two SSI concerts (the popular "airport" concert and the 1967 academy "all thyagaraja" concert) are eternal monuments to his percussion wizardry and the art of accompaniment. He richly deserves the SK, no doubt...

However, I do feel the Academy has been unfair in overlooking a living legend of percussion and a multifaceted genius who is at least ten years ahead of Sankaran Sir, both in age and in performance seniority: Sri. TVG. Also, looking at the last ten years of SK awardees there is a perceptible skew towards percussion (2001, 04, 07, 09 and now 11). Three vocal (03, 06, 10), two wind (02, 08) and one string (05). If not TVG Sir, the unfavorable imbalance towards strings could have been corrected by honouring another unsung senior giant: Sri. VVS. Will MA have to come up with another "special" session for these greats, a la LGJ?

I agree with others that Sri. TVG is the greatest Mridangam vidwan I have listened to, next only to Sri.Sivaraman.

Reason for his not getting SK is in my opinion, is his shifting his priority from mridangam to vocal and many other things. The loss of focus I think has worked to his disadvantage.

Same may be the case in future for Bombay Jayshree, Unnikrishnan, Jesudas (if ever he is considered!) and so on.

Congrats to Trichy Sankaran. His Air interview with BM Sundaram is a must listen - where he talks extensively about his Guru; his arangetram in 1955 for the concert of Alathur Brothers @ Nandrudayar Pillayar Temple @ Trichy. Sankaran also plays Kanjira to demonstrate "thakitadhom ..." the sollukattu of Dakshinamurthy Pillai.

It is also nice to hear Music Academy honoring Rama Ravi and Neela Ramgopal.

Mayavaram Somu is also one of the award recipients. Veteran artist. How many concerts, he would have played with Madurai Somu ...

MA failing to award SK to Madurai Somu is something that all his rasikas will always regret. People who have struggled and worked doubly hard to achieve greatness, IMO, are much more creditable than those who are naturally gifted at birth(prodigy?).

I understand from the Hindu news that Papa Venkataramiah Award will be given to Shri Subramania Sarma, Violinist from Trivandrum.
Subramania Sarma was a professor in the Swati Tirunal Music College, Trivandrum. But I am surprised at his selection for the Award. I have heard many concerts in eightees in which he has accompanied and considerably spoiled the concerts of TNS and Santhanam. I do not know whether he has improved afterwards. There is another very good violinist in Trivandrum, B.Sasikumar who was with AIR, Trivandrum. He was only capable of matching the vidwat and laya oriented swaras of TNS in the eightees. He must have been as better choice. But he is not known in Chennai music circles.
Subramania Sarma 's son and daughter, SR Mahadeva Sarma and Rajasree are very good violinists today.

Trchy sankaran sir fully deserves the title, keeping in view the immense work of propagting Carnatic music in the US and Canada and maintaining the purity of his Guru's style. Had he lived in India he would have naurally been on the top and who knows he might have had the title much earlier. Congratulations to Sankaran Sir. I feel the Rasikas org interview had served its purpose by opening the eyes of the Chennai rasikas to the true value of Sankaran Sir.

I fully agree, had he been in Chennai, he would certainly have received the award much earlier. He would have also got lot of other awards institued by the state and central governments. Yes, he would defnitely have climbed upto more heights had he been in India. But that does not mean that he in not on TOP now. He is on TOP with all others from 1960s.
