Carnatic Idol 2011 Raghavendra @Nadasurabhi on 17.7.2011

Post by kssr »

Carnatic Idol 2011 R.Raghavendra, son and disciple of Srimushnam Raja Rao and presently a disciple of Sanjay Subrahmanyan is singing at Nadasurabhi on 17th. Really curious to see how the Idol fares when given a full concert opportunity. I think he also went to the US for the cleveland aradhana (as a reward for winning CMI?).

See details in their website http://nadasurabhi.org

He was tested for his technical and aesthetic competence in Carnatic music by a large panel of the most distinguished vidwans, with several rounds of practical examination. The award also gave him an opportunity to participate in the grand Cleveland Festival in USA. Sri.Raghavendra is the son and disciple of senior mridangam Vidwan Sri. Srimushnam Raja Rao. He is currently taking advanced lessons from Sri.Sanjay Subrahmanyan. Besides giving several stage performances in Chennai and Mumbai, Raghavendra has also won awards from many leading sabhas.

The most prestigious auditorium in Koramangala with a seating capacity of more than 1000 people- The St.John’s Auditorium, Opp. BDA Complex, Koramangala- has been booked for the event. I didn't know he is Sri Srimushnam Raja Rao's son!

Listened to him at Gayana Samaja's recent youth festival, but figured out only a couple of days afterwards that he'd won the Idol competition.

Raghavendra is indeed a very talented artiste. I had the pleasure of listening to him live in Cleveland. VKailasam has uploaded a kharaharapriya (Janakipate) and Pantuvarali (aparamabhakti) on youtube from his concert there.

Here is an unusual clip of him playing the piano (the song is Martha my dear, by the Beatles from the White Album). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BU3wwCg9yN8

It shows how multi-dimensional some of these young musicians are these days!

Look forward to a review of the concert from the 17th. My best wishes for his continued success.

I didn't know he was Srimushnam's son! I heard him at Cleveland (via streaming). No wonder he's talented. Let's not forget his mother. She's Padma Chandilyan who's a vidushi and an excellent teacher, from what I hear. She's also the daughter of the well-known author Chandilyan.

Interesting news. Chandilyan was definitely a great writer. One small book of his that I read recently was of "Kamban kanda Pengal" (or something to that effect) which is about the important lady characters in Kambaramayanam. It was amazing. But I am told that his historical writings, esp description of women were bordering on the erotic.

I thought chandilyan was an Iyengar with naamam. Sri.Raja Rao wears the chandanam typical of Madhwas (not sure if he is one) and the photo of Raghavendra shows him wearing pattai pattai vibhudhi!! This is just a side comment.

Let us try to attend the concert of Raghavendra and enjoy it. Someone should also try to post a review.

Young Raghavendra's concert was superb. It is not without reason that he has got the Carnatic Idol award. I reached the venue 30 minutes late at 4.45. So, I will give the list from where I came in. Someone can fill in the first few songs.

1. Anandavall- Neelambari- Swathi Tirunal
2. Marivere dikkevvaru- Shanmugapriya- Alapanai and Neraval @Sannuthanga sri
3. Sarasa Saama Daana- Kapi Naarayani- Swaram at ithavu maatelendu
4. Nachai Vidavaku ra- Natakurunji- Mysore Vasudevachar- Chaturashra Rupaka
5. Main: Kaligiyunte- Keeravani- N, S @ Bhaguga Sree Raghu
6. Thani
7. Naaneka Bhadavano- Behag- Purandaradasa
8. Tamil virutham followed by Thillana in Darbari Kanada- Composition of Sri.Kalyanaraman?
9. Mangalam

Charulatha Ramanujam was on violin. Appeared a bit faded and lack lustre- of course no mistakes at all. One BR Srinivas was on Mridangam- Enthusiastic support although I have never heard him before. Veteran M.Gururaj on Morsing.

Quite a satisfactory performance. Full crowd. Suswaralaya (Sri. Sudhindra's institution) has sponsored the concert.

It was announced that on the 3rd sunday of august (21st) there will be Jayanthi Kumaresh's concert.
