Bombay Jayashri revisits bhairavi after more than 2 decades(5-11-89)!! She has gone up very high in the ladder in name and fame: So has Bhairavi. But it is amazing that she remembers vividly Bhairavi audience.Jayashri’s forte is her melodious voice and flanked by two tamburas on either side like rails she sticks to shruthi with obsessive devotion. While harikamboji had strong flavours of kamas, amrutha varshini and thodi came out elegantly in all hues and colours. R T P in kapi was the best part of the concert. Her raga alapanas
stuck to the idiom( no frills no thrills ) and her swara prastharas were marked by fluency rather than fireworks. Even the thillana ( Hamir Kalyani?) was sedate. There were only 2 tamil songs and the audience was a bit disappointed that the concert ended sharply in two and a half hours on the dot with A.I. R. precision without any song of Bharathi. The accompanists Embar Kannan Siva and Anirudh Athreya performed their role to satisfaction
The sponsors (General Optics-Asia ltd) honoured the artists with ponnadai

Is there a stated expectation (conveyed to the artists) that a song of the mahAkavi should be presented in concerts at Bhairavi? I have enjoyed a few in concerts way back when, but I was not sure it was a requirement/expectation.

thanks for your review, Sri Rajagopalan.
It is nice to see a report on Bombay Jayashri, who seems to be very much in the public eye, but gets few reviews on this forum.
Yes, she has had a significant rise to prominence since '89. I have always admired her shruti suddham and great sense of concentration/focus she has on her music. I have seen entire concerts, where she did not even open her eyes except during the tani. I wish she would be more interactive though, even occasionally
It is not common knowledge that Smt Jayashree is also a trained vainika (her veenai guru being fellow LGJ shishya SP Ramh's grandfather Sri GN Dandapani Iyer). Would be great if she would give a veena performance too. I was thinking about this when I saw SP Ramh's veena performance at the Radel festival.
And given her repertoire of Bharati songs (even ones with only the first 2 1/2 words inspired by Bharati), it is a pity that she didn't include one in her Puduchery concert.

Do artists who sing with open eyes not be concentrating?

Those who sing with their eyes open can still concentrate when they close their eyes! Those who keep their eyes closed can still concentrate when they open them--at least, that's what I think!

BJ IMO is today's best female vocalist. She sometimes consciously makes the concert lighter; but she can present a fully traditional heavy concert as well. Good that she came to Puducherry, as I understand that she is very very choosy. Even in Bangalore, we seldom have her concerts except a couple of them in Chowdiah hall. It is a nightmare to drive to Malleswaram from anywhere in southern bangalore. But she may have her reasons. Keeping one self rare will get better crowds to the few concerts they perform.

. We trust the discretion of the artists to give out their best .We do not insist nor there is any requirement that a Bharathi's song or OVK's song should be presented. we make a request or hint a suggestion. the absence may cause disappointment to many. May be we can call it a "sthala visesham ". Pozhudu miga is a composition of Ambujam krishna.
