May her soul rest in peace...

Srkris,
Thanks for the link. Her homage to her guru is touching. Shows us what an exemplary guru Chembai was. Not only that--his all-embracing personality and the way he inspired his students as a person also comes through in this essay of Manku Thampuran.

A nice picture of her and of Chowdiah and PMI as well. Is she holding a bul bul tarang in her hands? She was a student of hindusthAni music too, perhaps.

Arasi, I am not aware of that, but it doesn't appear to me she is holding anything in that photo.

Ah! I looked at it in dim light and it seemed like there was a box-like something on her lap. Now I see it in bright day light. It is just that the border of her top cloth (assuming she's wearing muNDu) gave me such an illusion.

The Kochi royal family had a bungalow (palace)in Kodaikanal. Manku Tamburan used to go there for the summer. Che has taken Chembai also there a few times. Once in 1939, Chembai went to Kodaikanal. There arrived Lakshmiratnam, second duaghter of Veena Dhanammal who was also the second guru to T.Brinda and T.Muktha, after their 4 year stint with Kancheepuram Naina Pillai.

Whilst Chembai taught Manku Tamburam he also learned a few pieces from Lakshmiratnam including a couple of padams. Lakshmiratnam stayed for a few weeks at Kodaikanal and returning to Madras passed away in 1940 at the young age of 52.
