Post by aditya »

The learnings we can have from Vintage concerts is something every upcoming carnatic student & fan must strive for. Thought I will post this as a learning for many of our forumites. Many such concerts are available in

Here's a set of two great vintage concerts of UKS in the year 1965 & 1972!!.

1. One is a Semmangudi - Chowdiah- UKS - Vinyakaram -1965. He is playing the Kappi mrudangam. The volume and nadam is incredible.

2. Another rare concert - TNK - M Chandrasekaran - UKS- Tanjore Upendran -1972 . Yes, double violin of T.N. Krishnan & M.Chandrasekaran This is again a brilliant concert. A must hear is Maruballka. The accompaniment of UKS is incredible.

Mr. Aditya and Respected Rasikas,

1. The first link indicated only contains some select pieces. The full Semmangudi-TC-UKS of 1965 is on the blog below the photograph of the concert if you go to the labels under either Semmangudi or UK Sivaraman in http://chowdaiahandparvati.blogspot.com/.

Vidwan UKS was probably the earliest and one of the most distinguished Mridangam maestros to play in "Parvathi". He was also everyone's favorite over a long time, gathering from the innumerable photos posted from the early days. Of course, this is not to take away from the other great ones who also performed with equal distinction and on innumerable occasions. (another great instrumental combination is that of the two Gopalkrishnans performing with Balamurali in the same year....ah, we don't want to be caught now playing favorites...do we!)

Thank you as always,
