SANDEEP NARAYAN IN PALLAVI DURBAR – 5 AUG 11

Post by CRama »

As a part of the Pallavi Durbar organised by Carnatica and Sree Parthasarathi Swami Sabha in MFAC Auditorium, Sandeep Naryanan presented the Pallavi at the 6 PM slot .He was accompanied by S.Varadarajan on the Violin and Arun Praksh on the Mridangam.
Sandeep Narayan is disciple of Sanjay Subramaniam which was explicit to a great extent in his style of singing and stage mannerisms. He has a very good voice which will impress the rasikas instantaneously. On a lighter side, he resembles Actor Surya. I was hearing his concert live for the first time.
The theme of the concert was Dwinadai pallavi.
Raga Sarasangi was chosen for the elaboration. He elaborated for about 15 minutes with all its splendour followed by thanam for 7 minutes. But there was some ambiguity in the raga structure. S.Varadarajan ‘s return confirmed that it is Sarasangi. The pallavi was set in the thala Chatusra Roopakam 4 kalai. The poorvangam of the pallavi was in Chastusra nadai and uttarangam in tisra nadai. The rendering of the pallavi was technically perfect. At the end, he presented the pallavi in various other nadais. Since I did not initially intend to make any posting, I did not write the sahithyam of the pallavi. Sorry. I hope somebody else will provide that information. The usual spark was missing in the case of S.Varadarajan. Arun Prakash excelled in his support and brief tani. The concert lasted for one hour.
The acoustics of the hall left a lot to be desired as already posted by Rajesh. Hope it will not fall to deaf ears and there will some improvement before the Season.

Thanks, CRama. You make some very astute observations.
SarasAngi is a difficult rAgam to handle for an elaborate RTP. Overlaps with Charukesi are difficult to avoid in the lower range and some overlaps with latAngi are possible in the upper range of the scale.

Glad to see Sandeep doing well. Unfortunately for me as I am out of touch with popular culture, I do not know what actor Surya looks like. I will try to google him after this :)
