Shuddha Seemanthini

[VISHNURAMPRASAD]

A short sketch of Shuddha seemanthini sponteneously rendered by Madurai Mani Iyer, upon a rasika's request (can be heard at the initial moments of the recording) followed by Janaki Ramana with neraval and swaras.

Shri MMI is accompanied by Thiruvalangad Sundaresa Iyer and TK Moorthy, concert held at Trichy cantonement for Rama Navami. The venue at which MMI performed for 25 years without a break and the place became to be known as "MANI MANDAPAM".

This recording dates back to 1956 (probably one of the oldest live concert recording that I have), this concert also features a fine Kedaaram, Nalinakaanthi from MMI.

Among the other stalwarts, Shri Nedanuri excelled in rendition of this krithi with swaras at rakthanalinadhala nayana. Am still on the look out of an alapana, am sure BMK would have sung this raga in his own inimitable way. In my opinion this raga gives good scope and invokes an intoxicating mood when rendered in madhyama sthayi, with panchama as centre swara.

Handling Gandhara in this raga-is it identical to that of Todi?

Many versions I have heard are favor in plain gAndhAra (as in dhEnuka) except LGJ's version, which has varied usage of gAndhAra.

SRJ's lec-dem which cmlover has uploaded indicates the same idea about gAndhara (being plain).

Yet to listen to some of the versions that have been posted here. Thanks to all the contributers.
