Namaste Hariharan, thanks for the link. I read all 7 posts in that thread, and there doesn't seem to have been consensus as to the rAgam name. The last thing mentioned was that it was rAgam hemant. Is that indeed correct?
Also, does anyone have a translation of the bhajan itself?

previous lyrics posted seem to not have two additional lines - posted by Lakshmanji on the net.
[I found the verse in Prachina sampradaya hai bhajanAmrtam by A.K.Gopalan. This has two extra lines. But I am not sure of some words(?) since the script was in tamil.- Lakshman] :

Re: gOpAla gOkula - request for rAgam and translation
Rag Hemant is a popular Hindusthani raga. There are film songs also composed in this raga in old Hindi films. Eg."Tum bin jeevan kaise beeta" - in film BAAWARCHI, sung by Mannadey (linkis { http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6LU4TA9KcA4 } or { http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9E9OuavE0XE }
Also please listen to Lata Mangeshkar a super Meera bhajan in rag Hemant "ud jare kaga "
the audio link is : http://music.raag.fm/Bhakti_Sangeet/son ... Mangeshkar
The aroh & avaroh of the rag is: Aroh: sgmdns Avaroh: sndpmgmrs {Bilawal That] vaadi "m" and samvaadi note is "sa" . Hemant is an Audav-sampoorna raga and for more details on the origin of tis raga please go through this link given below.
http://swaratala.blogspot.com/2007/04/r ... ctory.html
In another link this raga is explained differently in aroh and avaroh. the link is http://www.indiapicks.com/SNT_Hindi/P-168.htm
But, the rag Vallabhi is not heard before nor it is as popular as rag Hemant is. May be, Sri. MBK may have chosen the name Vallabhi as yet another name that the raga Hemant has to its credit, viz. Pancham, binna shadjam, kaushik Dwani etc as explained in first link referred above.
This song is very much in rag Hemant only, as per my views, despite other different names given for it.

Re: gOpAla gOkula - request for rAgam and translation
HariKrishna, here is my definitely amateurish attempt at giving you some context to the meaning. The language is something I have seen in some other compositions of Sri Tulsidas - where it is neither sanskRt nor avadhi/hindi entirely. I have made some tweaks in the lyrics - and I may be totally off. I hope some of the others like Rajani, Keerthi, Punarvasu et al may now be able to correct the mistakes I have made. Words and meanings I am not sure are in red font.
gOpAla gOkula vallabhI priya gOpa gOsuta vallabham

Re: gOpAla gOkula - request for rAgam and translation
Mr.Harikrishna, Please listen to the Youtube clip where Prince Rama Varma sings this bhajan in the Rag " Vallabhi". Here the rag vallabhi, as rendered by the singer, is unique . This rendition of the rag has, only at very few places, the traces of rag Hemant. One of the viewers also has commented that the raga Vallabhi is somewhat similar to the rag "ChayanaT"
The rag Vallabhi, sung in this clip has the trace of rag ' Saranga' at many places [as per my views].

Re: gOpAla gOkula - request for rAgam and translation
Ravi, such a wonderful translation...!
gosuta = children of cows (calves) Meaning he is the favorite of the cowherd men's children and cows children i.e. favorite of cowherd boys and calves.
manoharam = a heart -stealing beauty.
bhUri = immense amount
bhUri guNa karuNAkaram = one who comprises of immense amounts of qualities and mercy
rAkA mayanka = the moon of the night time. Meaning his face resembles a full moon of the dark night time. the word rAkA(night) has been put to emphasise on the beauty of the moon.

In Post #6 dt 1/8/11, hariharan says :
"Dr BMK may have given an alternate name as Vallabhi for Hemant Ragam.
This song is very much in rag Hemant only, ..."
But in Post #9 dt 16/8/11, hariharan says about Prince Varma's rendition :
"Here the Ragam Vallabhi, as rendered by the singer, is unique . This rendition of the rag has, only at very few places, the traces of rag Hemant. ... traces of Saranga ..."
*************
While searching for the Ragam, Taalam, Lyrics etc of this song, I also stumbled upon Prince Varma's above UTube link. When I first listened, I initially thought it was a Mishra of some Ragams.
*************
In this uploaded clip : http://www.sendspace.com/file/yfmplj, of the same song sung by Sheela recently, I would like to know the Ragam and Taalam.
Is it Vallabhi ? OR Hemant ? OR ??
Taalam ??
TIA

I forgot to add :
There is one more rendition of this same song by (a younger looking) Prince Varma in UTube :
Link 2 : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CUS5nCD65ME (6:11 m) - more Hindustani Style rendition, with just the Tabla accompaniment.
The Ragam in Link 2 above seems close to the same as the Ragam in the other UTube link (Link 1 : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jzyndQ91-Ho (7:40 m)), but Link 2's Ragam seems to have some traces of Mishra with Yamuna Kalyani ??
So, do we have the same song rendered in 2 close Ragams' here ?
Which one (or both ?) is in Hemant ?, which is in Vallabhi ? ; Or, do we have a 3rd Ragam here ?
*********************
And as requested before, in this uploaded clip : http://www.sendspace.com/file/yfmplj, of the same song sung by Sheela recently, I would like to know the Ragam and Taalam.

Re: gOpAla gOkula - request for rAgam and translation
This song rendered by Bombay Jayashree in her album 'Anubhavam' is said to be in the Rag Vallabhi. The rendition by prince Rama Varma of this song is also said to be raga Vallabhi. But both the renditions give a different raga bhava and not alike when you listen the song. There are records available to listen how the raga Hemant is whereas for Vallabhi there are no such records, nor heard earlier in any concerts, except this particular song sung by MBK, under the raga name Vallabhi. I said the raga Vallabhi rendered by Prince Rama Varma is unique, unique in the sense that it has at very few places only having the traces of Rag Hemant. These are only my views and need not be correct also. I still hold to my views that the raga of this songs sounds to me as Hemant only, whatever be the other names given for it.
Can anyone of our rasikas please contribute the arohana and avarohana notes and sancharas for rag Vallabhi. Id this information is available, we can judge better this song also.
