A 3 hour and 10 minutes concert by Sikkil Mala left me spellbound as she could play with all the energy and a smiling face till the end .Her choice of Bombay artistes for pakka vadyam should be applauded. They formed a wonderful team and their rapport was visible for we the audience.

I heard her for first time .
Her alaap Neravals and swaram in PurviKalyani sahana and karaharapriya were so ravishingly powerful and the swarams were outstanding.
I heard swara ranjani for the for first time .It sounded like Kadanakuduhalam. May be some on can guide me.
Loved Kamalamba ,Neelayadakshi and Bantureethi which were sung with passion
The purvi kalyani and karaharapriya A ,N S will remain in my ears for long.
The RTP was crisp and my mother told me that the pallavi was sung by KVN.
Madhavan on violin was brilliant in his returns for PurivKalyani ,Sahana and Karaharpriya.
Rajesh was his usual best playing with smile and power with pleasing hits on the mridahngam
Venkatesh gave an able support .
An excellent concert I can say by Sikkil Mala Chandrashekar .

Thank you for that review! I love Smt. Mala's presentations - I see her as a confluence of two musical streams - her mother/aunt's (Sikkil sisters) and her mother-in-law's (Smt. Radha Viswanathan, Smt MSS) and her concerts are wonderful, IMO! She also seems to be unfailing in encouraging local talent. On her trips to the US, IIRC, she was one of the first to present Rajana Swaminathan to wider audiences by insisting that she accompany her.
Lji - can you post the lyrics for the varNam? A perfect opening by Smt. Mala!

PUchi's swarNa ranjani--haven't heard that one.

Yes, MC has to be appreciated for giving the rasikAs the pleasure of a three hour+ concert and for encouraging young talents. They seem to have given their best too.

The PUci song is in sura-ranjani, listed in some places as swara-ranjani, and here it has been alchemically made into swarnaranjani..!

It was a favourite of Veena Doraiswamayyangar, and is a rAga that resembles kathanakutuhalam, in parts. Many instrumentalists like MSG, U.Srinivas and KanyakumAri have played this song.

Among the vocalists, Manda SudhArANi has sung it.

I can't say for sure, but I think Vid. B.Rajam Iyer has composed a lakshana gItam in this rAga, praising either PUci himself, or in praise of AriyakuDi.

Thanks Keerthi. You are a mine of information, as always! Nice to see your taking part a bit more actively at Rasikas.org, however busy you are.
