Verses from the nArAyaNIyam describing kALiya
Hi, can the following verses from Chapter 54(?) of the nArAyaNIyam (which describe kALiya as perceived by kRshNa when he jumps into the yamunA) be looked over for accuracy of words/splitting etc. and can I also have the word-to-word meaning of the verses?
Thanks!

nIpa = ixora bandhucca or Jungle geranium or veTci (Tamil)
kadamba = nauclea cadamba or kadambA (Tamil)
nimba = azadirachta indica or neem or vEppai (Tamil)
kadamba = nauclea cadamba or kadambA (Tamil)

Neepa and Kadamba are considered the same at leaast in Sanskrit and Tamil literature. Neem of course is different.

I used to think that as well, but our sanskRt poets are notoriously inaccurate in nature descriptions - they will put together plants in a landscape for reasons of prAsa. They will make all sorts of seasonal trees flower and fruit at the same time, because spring is nigh, or because it is the garden of the emperor!
Here is one instance where the nIpa and the kadamba are mentioned seriatim, and could mean different trees.

I always thought they were the same, because the dEvi is described variously as 'nIpa vana vAsini', or 'kadamba vana nilayE', but Keerthi's example makes me wonder!

while bhagavatam says krishna:kadambam adhiruhya, naraayaneeyam says teeraga neepa tarum in the kaaliya mardanam canto.so i thought neepa and kadamba are the same.elsewhere i have read neepa is neem.looks like all are different!!!

There is compelling evidence that nIpa is the same as the kadamba; but it could also be a variety of kadamba. Other obscure botanical connotations of nIpa include a flowering plant called Ixora and a variety of the ashOka.gowri narayanan wrote:

The word for neem is nimba not nIpa. This in turn can be confused with the hindi name for lemon , which is jambIra in samskRta.

In Tamil the tree is known as kaDamba maram (கடம்ப மரம்) or kaDambu (கடம்பு) or veLLai kaDambu (வெள்ளை கடம்பு), madurai is kaDamba vanam (கடம்ப வனம்), and lord muruga is kaDamban as in the popular expression 'kandA kaDambA kadirvElA' (கந்தா கடம்பா கதிர்வேலா)Pratyaksham Bala wrote:
