Komala Mukhiye KamalAlaye Kamalakshiye ...

Post by Sundar Krishnan »

Request Lyrics, Composer and Taalam info of this song in MohanaKalyaNi Ragam :

The song as I heard during MS Sheela's Kutcheri recently :

Komala Mukhiye KamalAlaye Kamalakshiye KomaLe / Mohate?
KamalaNabha ..., Kamala Mangala Madhura?,
...
KaruNana ... Kamala Hrudaye ... Bala Chandra?
DharaNi?, .... Shira Budha? ...

Pakshi Vahana Natha ...
Lakshmi Deviye ...

Language is probably Kannada ?, but not sure.

PS : I have searched this site with the string : "Komala Mukhiye" and "Komala KamalAlaye", but in vain.

Thanks in Advance (TIA)

Thanks Shri Lakshman for the Lyrics.

Also for the Audio by Sukanya Prabhakar, which she has sung in Poorvi KalyaNi.

But Sheela sang this song in MohanaKalyaNi Ragam the other day.

When I compare the Audio of Sheela with the Lyrics you sent me, it seems that Sheela has sung with "Lakshmi Deviye", but yr Lyrics shows "ramAdEvi".

Also, it appears that probably, one whole stanza, with the foll, is to be added to yr Lyrics, not sure, pl check :
KaruNana ... Kamala Hrudaye ... Bala Chandra?
DharaNi?, .... Shira Budha? ...

Pakshi Vahana Natha ...
Lakshmi Deviye ...

To ease in solving these problems, I have uploaded the converted Audio file (only a part of song) at this location :
http://www.sendspace.com/file/wajoof

TIA.

Sounds like the clip was recorded with a portable device. The words are difficult to decipher.

Shri Lakshman,

You are right.

Many of my such recordings are just clips (ie, portions of songs), in a small hand-held Video Camera. Due to Battery's max span of just about 1 hr, 20 mins (only if fully charged), and sometimes, also partly due to Memory restrictions, the recording is only for certain sections of the songs.

Naturally, in such a crude recording, and that too from far off in the audience, as you said it : "The words are difficult to decipher."

That is why, when I request for lyrics, I cannot be sure of the words.
This should probably answer yr earlier curiosity, which you had raised some months ago.

here is the complete song. Could have some differences from what was actually sung

There were a few words in the source that did not seem correct. Have question marks there.
The transliteration was checked with the following website

What a lotus-filled beauty on Sri Lakshmi. Thanks, Amateur, for the complete lyrics and additional caranams ! on this lotus-filled piece.

Curiously, Sukanya Prabhakar in the raaga link (post #2) sings only the very last two lines of the last caranam from this long version !! This is what I hear as she sings it :

KamalamukhiyE kamalAlayE kamalE kamalAkshiyE kOmalE
kamalanAbhana pAda kamalEyugana madhupE
kamalaja jananiyE kamalanEtrE suprabhE

(part C 4 of Amateur's contribution, post #8 )
C: mOkshadAyaki lOkarakshaki ramAdEvi ikshudhanvana janani
akshayaphaladE gOpAlaviTThalanE pratyaksha tOrisE pUraisE tAyE

A translation on this lotus-studded piece would be a lovely contribution. Anybody?

Looks like it was a beautiful concert with a wide and varied selection of songs from Karnatic Composers, by M.S Sheela and five of her disciples at Nadasurabhi, Sept 18, 2011. A lovely review here : http://kpjayan.wordpress.com/

Can Sundar Krishnan upload the entire song sung by M. S. Sheela? Possibly other songs as well ? Thanks a lot.

Amateur, Thanks for posting the lyrics in Post # 8.

Could you pl let us know the "source". Is it a web link ?
Or, from a book ? - Book's Title ?

*********

Also, I am curious to know how you used the CM Transliterator link :
http://arunk.freepgs.com/cmtranslit/editor.php
ie, did you actually type the script in Kannada font, and this site provided the English Text ??

smala,

I request you to read my Post # 5 :

"Many of my such recordings are just clips (ie, portions of songs), in a small hand-held Video Camera. Due to Battery's max span of just about 1 hr, 20 mins (only if fully charged), and sometimes, also partly due to Memory restrictions, the recording is only for certain sections of the songs."

So, I don't have the complete song - for any song !
Just certain sections, where, I felt that it was good, or where, I felt that I would have to listen more intently at home.

Thanks to all who made corrections.

here is an attempt at the translation: Would appreciate corrections & suggestions

KamalamukhiyE kamalAlayE kamalE kamalAkshiye kOmalE

O you
who are lotus faced has the lotus for a home, is red-coloured who are lotus eyed and charming
Who is
a bee to the lotus like feet of the lotus naveled Vishnu, the mother of lotus born i.e. Brahma, lotus eyed and beautiful
[one version also has kamalamitrE suprabhe: This also can fit, if we translate it to mean beautiful (suprabhe) like the red (kamala) sun (mitra). Since kamalAkshi is used earlier mitra may be a better choice??]

who has
feet resembling the sun, nails that defeat (in beauty) of the young moon
toe ring on the toes, anklet with bells meMTake (???) peMDeyu (??)
knees lustrous like the tusks of an elephant, the calf draped in dense frills
yellowish waist, waistband supporting tinkling bells (kiMkiNi bhara), the stomach with the lines of the three folds, wearing the graceful upper garment
[The nail of the big toe has the shape of a half moon hence bAlacaMdira the young moon
The only reason to consider biLiya instead of pilli is biLiya could refer to the ring made of silver

peMDe has been suggested as meaning earring in an earlier post
http://rasikas.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=1000 ... mbenu.html

In fact the comparisons of the nail etc. are very similar.

The word darpaNa i.e. mirror indicates the lusture,
jaMgha in Sanskrit refers to the leg between the ankle and knee
harimadhya is the term in Sanskrit for yellowish waist
trivaLi refers to the three folds on the stomach considered as a sign of beauty ]

Who has
A beautiful ruby finger ring a pair of hand that are like the trunk of an elephant
bracelet on the arm, ornament for the arm (vaMki), shoulder armlet, and armlet on the arms
Beautiful chains on the neck pendant, pearl necklace on the chest
shining chin, red lower lip, (tortoise like???) cheek, mouth small like a jewel box
(Not sure how kUrma fits with kadapu(cheek) unless the shape of the rounded cheek resembles a tortoise)

[baMdi itself means an armlet tOLbaMdi is probably used to indicate that it is worn on the shoulder. kEyUra also refers to an armlet.
Sribhuja is a term used to denote the arms of a high ranking person]

mandara in Sanskrit means a pearl necklace.
Vaijayantika itself can refer to a pearl necklace or a string made from a specific plant. The latter would fit better in this context]

is doe eyed, has eyebrows like the bow of manmatha, has ear ornaments,
kuMkuma, chain with a fig leaf in the hair parting on top of the kastUri tilaka,

O Lakshmi dEvi, auspicious one , who is praised by brahma ,shiva [phAla = forehead akshi = eye] and the gods
who grants liberation, who protects the universe, ramAdEvi, the mother of the one with the sugarcane-bow namely manmatha,
who grants unending rewards, O mother fulfill my desire and please show gOpAlaviThala in person

Thank you, Amateur. This composition by Gopala Das is the most descriptive of Sri Lakshmi I have come across to date. The details are quite elaborate.

The word *harinaDu* is *lionwaist* waist slim as the waist of a lion.
*hari * also means yellow but *lion* seems apt for the sentence.
The word *biLiya* may be *beLLiya* ...*of silver*.

Thanks.
beLLiya would be appropriate.
The other 2 words are still nagging me. A good dictionary such as the one by Rev. Kittel may have
some of the words like PeMDe but it is difficult to find a copy.

Amateur, thanks for the lovely (and non-amateurish) translation.
I have a question - could vyjayantika relate to the vyjayanti mAlA - the myth is that when mahAlakshmi arose from the kshIrAbdhi, all the gods and munis gave her gifts, and the gift from nArada was a garland, the vyjayanti mAlA (vijayi kurvanti, iti, vyjayanti, or something to that effect). lakshmi dEvi uses it as a varmAlA, and places it around vishNu's neck - and therefore, the vyjayanti mAlA is typically described as adorning vishNu, kRshNa etc, and not lakshmi usually.
