Kamalanath passes away

Post by kssr »

Sri.H.Kamalnath who was the President of Gayana Samaj Bangalore (Oldest sabha in South India) passed away yesterday. It is a matter of great regret to people who know him. He has been instrumental in bringing up the organisation to today's level. For decades he worked tirelessly for the organisation. The most gentle person I know of. Very hard working and never complaining in spite of the huge responsibility that he carried almost single handedly on his shoulders.

I am sure that it is a great loss to all musicians and lovers of Carnatic music.

I stand corrected. I just read a nice obituary by Mysore Subrahmanya in Prajavani - a kannada daily. I have paraphrased it here - Sri. Kamalanath was 86 and was ill for some time. He leaves behind 3 sons, daugther-in-law and grand kids. He has been hailed as a patron of music, social worker and an ace publisher. Hailing originally from Harappanahalli in Bellary, he graduated from central college with a Science degree. He then got into book publishing and distribution. He was amongst the first to have Germany's roland offset printing. He published over 400 books through Standard book depot (which was his) including works of Dr. Aa.Na.Kru and Dr. KS Narasimhaswamy's Mysuru Mallige. He also served Gayana Samaja for over 20 years. He was instrumental in having a spacious auditorium with excellent stage settings, modern sound systems and is hailed as a visionary. He also edited the monthly newsletter "Gayana Samrajya". He is remembered for his conducting the centenary celebrations of the Samaja - he was honored with the centenary award for his selfless service. In addition he was the president of the Small industries association of the state and also was the president of Mysore state publishers association. He was also an advisor to National Book trust, Chowdiah memorial and so on...
Indeed a multi faceted personality who worked tirelessly. I will never forget his gentle presence .. he seemed to be ever active and omnipresent. A huge loss indeed for all the bangalore music lovers....

Also - note his name was Kamalaanath - not kamalnath (sounds more like the politician)

Are you back, G_g?

Very sad. Condolences to near and dear.

Indeed, I saw year of establishment of Gayana Samaja on its banner and was amazed. I think it's 1905 -- ARI himself was about 10 years old then!

Sorry to hear this news!

I did not know he was 86 years of age. There was no indication of his age in his energy level!

The Hindu report says that he was 80. He looked more 80 than 86 when I saw him last time.
