Dr Mathoor Krishnamurti, Director,Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan - Bangalore Kendra passed away early this morning.

Mathoor Krishnamurti was a well-known & highly respected Sanskrit and Kannada scholar and also extremely popular public figure for his daily discourse on the Mahabharata and Upanishads on the Udaya TV Kannada Channel.

He was especially close to our family. Please find below a picture of Dr Krishnamurti with my mother on the occasion of the launch of the book “MS & Radha – Saga of Steadfast Devotion” in Bangalore on Sep 16th 2009 (before the commencement of the function).

I recollect that he mentioned in his speech on that day the generosity of TS and MS when they refused to take any compensation for the benefit concert which they gave for the London Kendra of the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan Building Fund in the year 1977 stating that the since the purpose of the concert was a fund raising event they would not like to burden the organizers further.

When the Bhavan offered them the airfare from India to UK and back, Sri TS refused this also stating that London was just a hopping stop on their trip to US and therefore the airfare had already been taken care of by the US hosts!

Mathoorji was then the Director of the UK Kendra of BVB.

Without him, BVB in London would probably not exist. I am an insignificant part of London VBV's history (partly because it took me twenty years to discover it), but it played a huge part in my life and direction from age 40 onwards.

He had recently moved back to India when I joined in the activities there, but I saw him and heard him speak on several occasions, and I sometimes repeat one of his jokes (it is about a poor Brahmin buying an umbrella, if anyone knows it, but I will not attempt it in writing, it just would not work).

(Cienu, Dr Nandakumar, the current executive boss of London VBV is his son in law? Not sure.)

Really sad - on TV he used to get so involved with his discourse that he used to literally cry - he used to identify with the characters so strongly - and am sure many viewers did too. A truly great loss. We were wondering why he was not coming on TV for the last few days.

Thanks for the links. Reading them gives us an idea about how richly he lived his life, mostly in the building up of an institution like BVB, and of course, in connecting with people because of his Gandhian roots, and of his involvement in the arts.
Another bridge to the svarAjyA days is lost.
