A world music concert in the Bay Area on the 15th of Oct
" In their restless search for musical excellence and cross–cultural innovation, saxophonist/composer George Brooks, frame drum phenomenon Glen Velez and south Indian Chitravina virtuoso N.Ravikiran join forces with vocalist Lori Cotler and percussionist Trichy Sankaran, for an uplifting evening of global harmony, drawing from the rich musical traditions of India, the Middle East, North Africa, and the Americas"
The event is going to be held in the Bay Area in Palo Alto at Gunn High School auditorium at 7:30pm on the 15th of October, 2011.
Hope that many rasikas have seen the flyers and will be able to attend and enjoy the concert. I am looking forward to it.

Dear Rasikas,
Just to share a couple of points about the other legends here - Glen Velez is a 5-time Grammy Awardee and hailed as the Father of Frame Drums. It was most interesting to note that he had a great admiration for kanjira maestro Harishankar. In fact, both he and Harishankar sir played in my album, Rays and Forays by Naxos World in the year 2000 (which included Brazilian pianist Jovino Santos Neto, Chinise pipa virtuoso Qia Xe He and Shri Poovalur Srinivasan). I am looking forward to Glen's interaction with Sankaran sir in this concert.
Lori Cotler is a charismatic konnakkol artiste with training in Indian rhythms from maestro Shri T H Subhashchandran. (She is also Glen's wife!). I am sure most of you know Mr George Brooks, who is hailed as the greatest Indo-jazz saxophonist of our times. He has worked with literally all legends of HIndustani music as well as with the likes of McLaughlin. We have been discussing and exchanging music for this concert over the last several weeks and are also going to rehearse live from tomorrow. We intend to present composed pieces featuring ragas such as Dhavalambari, Bilahari, Shubhapantuvarali, Hamsadhwani as also pure jazz and world beat compositions. We sincerely hope that these translate into a good musical experience for all...

Dear Ravikiran
Good luck for tonight's program (if you're reading this !)...and hope you have lots of fun bringing together such an accomplished and eclectic group of artists. I am sure the spirit of the amazing and one and only Harishankar will grace the presentation ! Wish such programs happened in places I live and/or visit !

smala,
Such good pictures, and samples! Thanks a lot.
This khanjira fan just loved Valez's play--Lori Cotler is a delight.
How I wish we could hear samples from fellow-rasikA (vidvAn) Ravikiran and TS with them, and Brooks!

Arasi, thanks. I could have recorded but am only gingerly stepping my way into things ... Hopefully someone did record them at the Spangenberg Theater on Saturday. Pics above are from their show at Freight & Salvage, Sunday.
Here's a George Brooks - Kala Ramnath performance in Global Conversations.

A sample of Trichy Sankaran's Carnatic Concerto found online - NOT the one played in the recent Global Harmony concert.
