meaning of rUpamu jUci
anupallavi:
tApatrayaharuDai = one who eliminates the three kinds of cares (problems)
velayu = residing
idEmi = what is this ?
This above anupallavi is of Varnam in thodi ragam ,thalam adi.-Roopamu juchi
v alachi vachitini.Please i would like to know what are these three kinds of cares. What are the sancharis that we can .use ..Thanking you

Kunjamma,
The three tApa are:
1. AdhyAtmika, sufferings arising from one's own mind and body;
2. Adhidaivika, sufferings arising from nature; and
3. Adhibhautika, sufferings arising from other living entities.
Since rUpamu jUci is a varNam in praise of Siva, I would think that for AdhyAtmika you could use the sancArI showing the destruction of love/madana - Siva as the destroyer of trials and tribulations that arise when one 'gives in' to love....
ALTERNATELY, you could use the story from the Siva purANa where he cures the stomach ache of the king who had converted to jainism.
Adhidaivata - you could show how Siva stopped the vaigai from flooding madurai OR mArkaNDEya - where he triumphs over the natural force of death OR the story of his swallowing the poison - halAhalam.
Adhibhautika - could show the story of 'nari tanai pari Akki, pari tanai nari Akki' from the SIva purANam again.

is this a cauka varnam or a pada varnam?
i was looking for this in other places as well and it was mentioned as a cauka varnam.... but if it is a pada varnam... it doesnt seem to have the usual muktaiswara... any particular reasons?? is it lost in the transference over time or this is all there is to the composition?
also i see a comment which says it was converted to a pada varna by Smt.RDA... so in which form is it in vogue now..? as a cauka or pada varna..
would be wrong or incomplete to present the varnam with just the above mentioned sahitya and the other charana swaras as just nritta bits??

Bhargavi - It will look incomplete if you dance to it without the sAhityam for the caraNasvaras, especially for the people who know this varNam. You can go to this link, and download the thesis of Ms. Priyashri V. Rao and look for the missing svara sAhityam - alternately, you could ask anyone from Kalakshetra - I do not think that there is even one graduate of that institution who has not learned this varNam.

That's an amazing link, with the thesis notating the entire varnam with little stick figures showing each position!! My knowledge of dance is minimal, and this will be a very useful device. The other links on that page also sound very exciting. It is simply amazing that varadAchariar has fitted in elegant poetry to the muktayi and chitta-swaram-s; with such 'auchityam'.
This and his srirajani varnam-s are enough to prove the 'Tiger's' virtuosity and genius as a musician and composer to us, who have very little knowledge of his singing.

Keerthi - that is so correct! This varNam is beautiful - and in addition to 'Tiger's' abilities, I also marvel at Smt. RDA's imagination in choosing this particular varNam to create a padavarNam out of. Her choreography for this varNam is also filled with 'aucityam'

That, or, he could be upset with a mere mortal approaching him with SRngAra, something that is usually between equals - alluding to the difference in their status - He, a god worthy of her devotion and worship, and she, a mere mortal.
