A very interesting collaboration on at the Southbank's Purcell Room in London this weekend - Veena Jayanthi and Anil Srinivasan. Londoners should celebrate their Diwali with this interesting duo!

I was wondering if Anil Srinivasan was going to play during this season. I missed istening to him last season. I am wondering: is it the first time he's playing with a vINA artiste? I did hear B. Kannan play the VINA with him two years ago, but the vINA was part of the orchestra.
Of course, he has played with vocalists and violinists in duets.
I do hope that at least a few rasikAs members turn up. It's in the Purcell room too, a different setting from a CM concert and an outing to the South Bank as well...

Is it a full fledged Carnatic concert or a jugalbandi/ fusion type of concert. Never heard Anil Srinivasan. Hence the question. Jayanthi can of course weave magic with her instrument, whatever be the kind of concert. Hope there is good attendence and the concert is a success.

The Purcell Room figures large in my early association with Indian music. It is perfectly suited, with an intimacy not found in larger halls, especially the more formal concert halls. It is also very comfortable

Anil Srinivasan plays the piano in a fusion concert unobtrusively. His blending in with a rAgam is done finely and gently, enhancing what the other singer/player has to offer. This is the impression I get when I listen to him. I've heard him play with Gurucharan, and with Viji Natarajan on the violin and in an ensemble of various instruments like the vINA and percussion instruments. He is an accomplished pianist in western classical music. He grew up in a vibrant CM environment, and is a cousin of a star of CM (TMK--you may already know this!).
When I hear him, I think he brings western classical music to CM rasikas in its pristine form. For those among CM listeners who want to hear a bit of classical music of the West, he's worth listening to.

Sri Anil Srinivasan has a couple of records out with Sikkil Sri Gurucharan - one of which is called madirAkshi - that will provide a good idea of what these concerts are about. IMO, they are great...the piano is non-intrusive, and provides a very melodious envolope for the CM. Just to be clear, there is no effort to 'Indianize' or 'carnAticize' the piano music; so, it must take a lot of planning on Sri Srinivasan's part, and of course, a very thorough understanding on his part of both the CM composition being presented and WM, to ensure a proper blending of both mood and melody. The only thing is that this format is best for slower paced compositions.

Honestly, I have only a peripheral knowledge of this matter but indeed curious. Jayanthi Kumaresh has made one CD which I listened to. Not typical CM but very nice at least for the first time- the skill in bringing out such music from a single instrument is obviously evident.

Probably the fusion may be another interesting facet. I do not know if it happens in Bangalore anytime in the near future.

In one such collaboration, what Anil played for Vasantha was just brilliant and it was a treat to listen. As Arasi and Ravi mentioned above, he just plays the western part without trying to fuse it with carnatic. I can not recall which collaboration it is, it may be Sikkil G.
