chandrashEkharA IshA - sindhubhairavi - Adi
patiki hArati - suruTi - Adi - thyAgarAja
Outstanding kharaharapriya alapana with haunting prayogas at the madhyama - stole the show from the detailed sAvEri alapana earlier which was equally good, if not better. Soulful rendition of the post pallavi pieces. Great team effort. The concert started on a brisk note with the varnam and the gaNapati piece. rItigauLa lent tranquility to the concert. The vivAdi rAga kAntAmaNi was exploited next, the thyAgarAja kriti was rendered briskly with neraval and swaras at the charanam line. Though the rendition was good - one felt a sense of restlessness in the audience due to the 'unfamiliar' nature of the raga - esp during the alapana. The navAvarnam in sahAna was in mishra chApu - at a brisker pace than the tishra tripuTa version one is used to hearing. The short sketch of biLahari and the kriti set the pace and the mood back for the main item.
The accompaniment was of high order. HN Bhaskar played in a measured manner and won applause for the way he followed the duo. One felt the mridangam was on the louder side - however, technically the accompaniment was great. The ghatam artiste from Mumbai was good. It was nice to see the mridangist encouraging the ghatam player all along. In fact, he even applauded the main artistes and violinist after some rendition/elaborations.

The kharaharapriyA AlApanA in this concert by Sri Ravikumar was one of the most unique elaborations I have heard. It was artistic expression at its peak. As a friend of mine who is a knowledgeable rasika observed "The hall was his for the duration of the AlApanA. That's what we go to concerts for."

Reading this review itself gives me goosebumps, I can understand how good the concert would have been. Malladi Brothers are simply great.
I have listened to a sublime Devagandhari from a commercial cd sometime back, and I have found very little to beat that kind of music. Their selection of songs are also unmatched IMHO.

The Malladi Brothers have had the good fortune of spending thousands of hours with the peerless Sri Nedunuri, listening and imbibing from his vast stock of knowledge. I asked them recently about their learning from him, and in the course of the conversation, they mentioned that they have learnt 'all the tyAgarAjA krithis that he knows.' What good fortune!!!
