Shraddhanjali by Lata
This could be a subject which probably been discussed earlier, but I came across this only recently and I was thoroughly impressed by the songs I heard. For those not familiar with this, Lata has sung two or three great songs each of yester year singers such as Saigal, Pankaj Malik, Mukesh, Hemantda and Kishore. The back ground score is exactly the same as the original. The singing is beautiful. I would love to read the impressions of our Rasikas.

yes , it was a befitting tribute to the great film singers who had proved that singing in films is not that easy as it is supposed to be,especially viewed from the fact that non of them had proper training. Lata has done a wonderful job selecting the immortal songs of t he artists mentioned

Re: Shraddhanjali by Lata
That was a miserable album. I remember , we went to the bridge on the river near my town and hurled the tape with all the force at our command , into the waters .
This was typical of what is portrayed as shraddhanjali these days . And perhaps a precursor . These are examples where the artist tries to project themselves against a backdrop of something from the past beyond reach . You will understand if you have ever bought a tape labelled shraddhanjali to MLV - ( Bless her soul - another birthday passed yesterday without a mention anywhere) - or even a tape with the largest photograph being of MLV ... without checking the contents .
All the songs sung by her in this album were poor imitations . She would have never dared to sing Babul Mora or Do naina ...
Forget about older masters . Lata came a cropper on the few occasions where she had to sing the same song as Kishore .
Just tune in to chanda o Chanda in lakhon mein Ek and see the difference .
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vXX464l95VE.
Kishore creates magic the moment he appears .How could any one put such a range of emotions into his voice .
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1WFP87mIDPk
If only Kishore had taken up Carnatic Music !!!!!
Asha Bhonsle could sing any of the 30000 songs of Lata .
Lata would never be able to sing this one alone.

BTW Srilanka Broadcasting Corp paid a shraddhanjali to Saigal by playing one of his tracks , last in the 7.30-8.00 am slot. For decades without fail.
We did not have a radio at home, then. And we would walk down to the nearby grocery store to eavesdrop and catch this piece of history. Everyday .

varsha, here is yet another beauty by Asha
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GKFalJWnqh4
we must give full marks to O P NAYYAR for fully utilising the magical, birga laden voice of ASHA to create wonderful melodies
But at the same time we cannot say that Lata could not have sung any of the thousands of songs of Asha. that is too sweeping a statement. OPNayyar has himself stated that the voice of Asha would suit certain songs

There has been a bit too much of a hype and bias with respect to a few musicians. Without thinking and giving consideration to the capabilities/capacities of their contemporaries. Two musicians who come to my mind instantly (no disrespect of any sort, they are ofcourse (my view) and indeed they are some of the greatets musicians India has produced)
1. Lata (Asha was a more versatile singer and a better singer)
2. MSS (MLV was a teriifcic terrific singer any day, versatile, a beautiful voice, repertoire, you can name anything
gobilalitha
I think Varsha mentioned one song alone as a comparison between the 2.
