About a year back , when I had attended concert at pozhichalur(suburb near pallavaram ) there was a kid who sat next to me who got up and got a prize and a round of applause from his local pettah rasikas . He was Master G Abhilash who hailed from that part of chennai and flash forward day before yesterday I had a chance to break my routine as it was a very long hibernation of me not attending any CM concert. Infact bit fortitous one as officially I had to be with my collegues there but at the last minute that engagement got cancelled.

This concert was organized by Vasanthapriya trust , it was put in the paper that the convenor was Ms A kanyAkumari though she was not personally there to attend the concert.

When AbhilAsh hummed few alapana strains of bEgaDa , he had a such a powerful s a r e e r a m , that was just booming with vocal heaviness that ariyakudi would be proud of .He has a kind of stout build and sings with minimum bodily movement reminding a bit of Voleti too...

Abhilash started with carnatic bEgaDa , to a great extent I am a fan of this rAgA bEgaDa when sung bit early it just removes all the blockages from your nABhi to mouth I guess and he sang beautifully. His second no was nattai , after few gentle strokes of rAga alapana, he sang lovely lines of slokA in Nattai and then proceeded with Dikshitar's NAttai masterpiece . I was bit dissapointed that he did not sing swaras in nAttai

But it looked he had a gameplan to take a more thrustful opener , an opener that is owned by his great grand guru Semmangudi mAma and it was mAyamAlava gowla in ST's deva deva kalayAmithE , nice thrust with a real rolling neraval with a nice support of mrudangam by Sumesh. The neraval to swaras jumps was illustrative of his Semmangudi mamA's vidA pudi swara prasthAram(lot of oscillations of gA with ma held constant) and I enjoyed it immensely.

10 mins alapana and 6 mins violin return
10 mins swaras

8. venkatAchalanilayam - sindhubhairavi - PD
9A. "viruththam" vizhikku thunai - shanmughapriyA + mohanam+ sahAna + shankarAbharanam - kandar alankaram by aruNagirinAthar
9B. kAdi mOdi - shankarAbharanam - thirrupugazh by aruNagirinAthar

10. pavamAna + mangalam kosalendrAya

Just when I was thinking may be this kid may not sing MLV's popularized number out came one of the finest creations of Shri GNB which was sung by MLV , it was a UnnadiyE gathi Enru in bahudAri , it was a real antha kalathu sangeetham there , his thamizh diction was wonderful and with that diction he did not lose the GNB-MLV over drive mode of BahuDari(this krithi of GNB is one of my favourite as a composer )

The heaviness of bEgaDa in varnam that fizzled bit out came in full steam in varAli, this kid was singing with minimal bodily movement like voleti and sangathis were well done , Shyama sastri's bangAru Kamakshi with a nice round of unhurried swaras was a nice change of tempo .

The doubt that I had at the beginning of how this concert was related to Smt MLV came back as I am not sure if GNB/MLV has sung this particular varAli was answered with utmost conviction, he took one of GNB's wonderful creation amritha behAg and KamalAcharanE did really hit the sweet spot of intense classicism.

If Dikshitar was sung and Shyama Sastri was taken and when it is kharaharapriyA as a main would you not feel bit more elated ?. His alApana was really well done. Smt MLV is very impressive in this kharaharapriya cluster of rAgas and this kid sang with a lot of involvement , the krithi was rama nee yeda he built the krithi so beautifully. My first slight disappointment happened when he appeared to just start a neraval in tana sowkhyamu, but just dodged and skipped and went to swaras . Swaras had a bit of kanakku in early stages and I enjoyed his long cycles of TNR trademark sangathis in kharaharapriya in second half in a lovely high drive sarvalaghu mode .

Post tani he sang a nice venkatAchalanilayam , his s a r e e r a m still strong and indeed a nice testimony of Smt MLV who is known for her purandaradAsar krithis . There was a viruththam and he gave a great finish in two ragas mohanam and sahana(especially), the start in shanmughapriya was too quick did not soak that much bhavam and the last sankarAbharanam had a first half tinge of kalyAni. He wrapped with thirruppugazh , a nice impromptu selection as yesterday was sasthi day of Lord Muruga

The mridangist Sumesh Narayanan a young student may be one class higher than the vocalist (AbhilAsh is now studying 11th standard in a school in pallavaram)and his play had lot of controlled aggression. The violinist Smt hemamAlini was a nice school teacher controlling two accompolished kids and she really played and helped the concert to reach a comfortable zone of excellence. Her alapana in kharaharapriya was nice.

Few Disappointments:
--------------------
IF there was one notable disappointment in the concert it was Abhilash high volume thAla thumping in his thighs at times it was distracting my attention, that too during rupakam of deva deva kalayamithE when thumping comes heavily for 2 out of 3 cycles.

ON a macro disappointing note was the crowd ,in one side there were about 20 to 25 seated together all friends and relatives of the performers and in the other half it was only me and another elderly GNB-MLV rasika patron.

As the world marches with a population of 7 billion+ pairs of ears who could be potential rasikas , but it is unexplainable mystery that there are not enough hears inside the CM halls . I am optimistic that abhilash is going to be a great musician as he has enough classicism intense gears .Abhilash certainly belies his age in his pursuit of chaste sampradaya music and his vocal weight and sustained pitch is wonderful.

Overall a very good to excellent concert for nearly 2 hours by this another newest   abhi.
