Posting a new Varna
Why am I posting it here? Novermber 1st is Kannada Rajyotsava - a festival of a different sense for me!
This is one of my experiments - a varNa in raga Madhuvanti. Click here to access the notation: https://neelanjana.wordpress.com/2011/1 ... sava-2011/
Rasikas feedback would be very valuable for me!

Re: Posting a new Varna
Ramakriya! NIce!! Please post an audio link - some of the prayogas are tricky; e.g., those in the 4th ettugada swara. It is important to know how the gamakas must be sung in r p m p r (how is the gandhara intoned in the slide from p to r, if at all? how is it distinct from a Hamsanadam phrase?) or p s n s D (the nishada in the slide from s to D). Other than Lalgudi's tillana, I am unaware of other compositions in this raga - this varnam is a welcome addition. As an aside, I am reminded of a jugalbandi (Dharmavati by TNS and Madhuvanti by Ajoy Chakraborty) that I heard sometime back (thanks to K'ji). Madhuvanti has also been essayed quite frequently by Parveen Sultana. Will have to listen to these again to get a better feel for portrayal of the raga chhaya in the varnam. Do tell us more about your inspiration for this composition.

Nandagopal, Thanks a lot for taking a look at it!
Hopefully, there will be an audio that's worthy of posting soon. I don't think my current recording is good enough to be posted on Rasikas

Ravi,
Thanks! I would think several varNa-s do exist in kannaDa language. Ramakriya's was the first one I have heard.
I would like to hear more. I wonder if Mohan can share the one they performed, or if there is a link for an upload, I would be interested to listen/watch.

Sreeni,
I am pretty sure there are many. I have seen some varnas that Sri TKG has composed with the sAhitya taken from ugabhogas of Purandara Dasa in his compilation of varnas. I guess the book is called Varnasagaram.
On a similar note, I composed a varNa in rAga nAgaswarAvaLi using the lines of a famous vachana of Basavanna (nAdapriya shivanembaru).
You can listen to this varna from a concert of Sri Ragavan Manian (from a concert held in bay area, CA, last year)

The varNa is preceded by some verses, and starts at around 5:56 minute mark in this video.
