Post by Sreeni Rajarao »

I wanted to initiate this thread and request for Smt. Savitri's help with the meaning and any corrections, if required.

I have copied and pasted here lyrics provided by Lakshmanji in another thread.

I would like to give this link that I just recently discovered, so that fellow members enthusiastic about dAsa sAhitya would also be able to enjoy this version!

(I have heard this before in tODi rAga. Arasi avaru has mentioned elsewhere that she has heard this in pUrvi kalyANi)

Love this version from Sri Vidyabhusana :

If the above link doesn't work, try this.

[It works from this page below where I found it. Scroll down to post #29 by one Sudarshan C. for song Enu dhanyalo lakumi and below it is the link.]

Is it just me, I find that beautiful as Mahalakshmi Shenoy's rendition is - it sounds filmy or "romantically devotional" as one comment put it - or is it that this raga/rendition is popular with film music directors ?

How fortunate is lakShmi,how revered is she
With affection she is serving hari by herself.[p]
Though millions and millions of servants are there
She is serving the golden robed one,worshipping with
unmatched fervour[c1]
She has assumed the shapes of Chatra.the cAmara,the saddle, the utensil
She is perpetually serving hari who has performed distinguished deeds[c2]
She is serving the Omnipresent,Flawless,purandara viTTala,who rides the garuDa[c3]

{chatra::the umbrella}
{cAmara :: the whisk made from the hairs of yak}
{vyajana::whisking}
{pAtra::the utensils used for worship}

Corrections welcome.

Although I like all the renditions above (see links in previous posts) this is, by far, the BEST rendition I have heard so far, imho.

(Mahalakshmi Shenoy, Vidhyabhushana (2 different renditions)

Pandit Vinyak Torvi.
http://www.muzigle.com/track/yenu-dhany ... alo-lakumi
(last line is "sarvAdi vamdya" purandhara viTTaLAna)

Thanks for the translation, Smt. Savitri.

Found this translation on the net.

How fortunate (dhanya) and respectable (mAnya)
woman is Mahalakshmi (lakumi)
Serving (sEve mADutihaLu) Shri Hari herself(tAne)
with love/passion(sAnurAgadiMda)

There are servants (bRutya) in crores (kOTi-kOTi)
to serve hATakAMbara(Shri Hari with golden apparels)
excellent(shrEShTa)/unmatched (sAtiyillade) service (sEve)
done by noble-woman (pUrNaguNalu)

Catra-umbrella, cAmara-fan made of wool (animal's hair)
vyajana-another type of fan, paryaMka- Cot
serving Shri Hari, a marvelous historian (citra caritanAda)
daily (nitya) in various forms (pAtra rUpadalli)

Shri Mahalakshmi is serving Shri purandaravittala, who is
flawless/stainless (sarva dOSharahitanAda), having Garuda as
his vehicle (garuDagamana), worshipped by all (sarva vaMdya)
available everywhere (sarvatradi vyAptanAda)

If I understand this correctly, this concept is at the very core of the SrIvaishNava belief - which elevates mahAlakshmi to the status of the 'parama guru'. If we believe that one of the main purposes of a guru is to intercede with God on behalf of their disciples - then, mahAlakshmi, with her selfless service places herself in the unique situation of being in the best position to intercede on anyone's behalf.
Krishna and Arasi may be able to correct me.

rshankarjI,
your opinion is correct.Even in daily life the lady of the house
is more approchable than the householder.
'nannu brOvamani ceppavE sItamma talli'.
smalajI.
Thank you.
I took 'pAtra'in the line as 'utensil'
'citra carita' means 'manifold adventured'
'marvelous historian' may not be the suitable meaning.

I have heard the delightful rendering of this song in Thodi by
Mysore V Doraiswamy Iyengar. Don't know if it is available on the net.

5a5b & others,

This song has been rendered by MLV and a few others in Chakravaakam very mellifluously with bhaava. As for ur meanings given, vyajana is a fan made of metal or bamboo. Contextually speaking, "chitra charitanaada hariya" should mean the God who has or possesses many different avataaraas & histories, isn't it ?
