Ravi,
It happens often. I do see that it's a bit tough with our names.
You for instance, can be billed as Sankar, Shankar and Shanker, dependent on how the person who sends the program to the press or writes the review sees it! However, like you, I feel that when it's a well-known name, they should pay attention to how she or he spells the name. The more we know a name, the more the variations in spelling, I'm afraid!Take for instance a name starting with Subra!

He did say that it was a minor crib!
If only there was no numerology --- name spelling might be a lot simpler. Well, ok, a bit simpler; at least it would rid us of some of the more contorted forms. One is still left with the rendering in roman script and English pronunciation of something that is neither.
I remember an argument, decades ago, with someone who said I had mis-spelt some word of non-roman-script origin. Well, they were probably right, but my point of view was that it was not an adopted word like pyjama or bungalow, but something obscure, so how could there be a right English spelling?
I waffle... nothing really to do with names, or with the Carnataca event :$ --- but at least it "bumps" the thread!

Aha! You mean, Carnatica
Not KarnATaka, CarnATaka, karnATica and the way you spell it...
Nick,
You are fine. With my short name, even among those who have known me all my life, some spell my name differently. All I can do is speak the name of the deity on the seven hills and address him as : SrinivasA! ShrinivAsA, SreenivAsA

Did I mention ... I can't spell even in my own language! :$ :$ :$
Mind you, it is said to be one of the most painful, spelling-wise, even for natives.

Now that pet names are talked about (shortened versions, mostly)--Cienu...
I was thinking of the spelling of your name as I typed Shrinivasan.
Srikant,
ChImA and chImAchu are popular, and I used to know a chImAchi pATTi!
With Nick, well, Nicholas, and there is Nicky.
Carnatica Brothers: Shashi or Sashikiran? No problems there with Ganesh. I don't think you can spell it any other way!

Sharanya,
Thanks for putting up with all the horse play about names in this thread.
Would like to hear more about the Carnatica team's imaginative programs like this from fellow-forumites who attend. Hope to see pictures from Ramanathan and snippets from CarnaTech 2011.
I bet names starting with Subra 'are' a challenge. You got it right up to Subrahman, and then...
Have a great festival!

Re: Carnatica presents CarnaTech 2011
As much as I am a Mac fanboy (I own almost every Apple product of the past decade), I really don't see a particularly relevant connection to Steve Jobs here!! But, I love the theme of technology and carnatic music. I wish I could attend, but I am reaching India only a few days after. Any chance of an official video recording/webcast of the presentations as well?Sharanya Krishnamurthy wrote: - The presentations in the morning will be by celebrity musicians on various aspects of Technology and Carnatic Music. This session will be a tribute to Steve Jobs.
What is up with people creating all these music calendars?Sharanya Krishnamurthy wrote: - Also keep your fingers crossed for some more surprises like the launch of Mobile app of Vidwan Sanjay Subrahmanian and Carnatica's Season Special events calendar app for the discerning tech rasikas...

You dont have to be a wizard to see the connection to Steve Jobs .
If you know the perpetrators of such farces very well .
It is the dough that sticks out of your pockets and gullible sponsors .
Btw the ultimate honor for a physically challenged musician is not an arranged program , but
1. Treating them like JUST any other musician
2. Asking them to perform where there are no architectural barriers / challenges .
Man . Get your priorities right . They are NOT PARALLEL . they are ALSO MAINSTREAM .

Re: Carnatica presents CarnaTech 2011
I might not go that far --- but I could add ways in which technology, or rather its misuse, is certainly no friend to the music. But we have done to death (unfortunately not literally) the bad sound systems, the poor engingineers using them, the over-loud sruti boxes ...and so on.
How did Steve Jobs get in here? No tribute from me!
The people who actually gave us the innovations that form part of our modern daily lives went largely unmentioned by the marketing departments and did not have stage shows, impressive (Jobs) or ludicrous (Ballmer). Tribute, please, for instance, to Dennis Ritchie, who died shortly after Jobs. He was not a CEO; he was not a ruthless businessman ... he was a decent guy who also happened to be a genius who developed a big chunk of the foundations of today's IT world, including the foundation of the Mac operating system.
The area of disability is one where it is so easy to put one's foot in it, even while having good intentions. viswanathmysore is absolutely right. This one needs a rethink. --- and it is much more important than whether each of us may be any or none of a Jobs/Gates/Linus fanboy.

The biggest sin is to isolate them and awarding them on a special basis. Why cant they be part of the normal people and duly recognised. THIS IS RUBBING IT IN !!!!Sharanya Krishnamurthy wrote:

Re: Carnatica presents CarnaTech 2011
I am sure the Carnatica team have labeled the event as such with the best of intentions and not to hurt anyone's feelings. They have been doing an outstanding job.
However I do agree with the sentiment expressed above. We have in our midst some outstanding musicians who just happen to be physically challenged. And we should leave it at that. I am sure that the artists too would be embarrassed to be categorized as such.
Where we can lend our voice and contribute is by supporting them in instances where they have been treated callously (ref link to Erode's blog below)
http://www.rasikas.org/forums/viewtopic. ... de#p208819
OTOH , I would welcome opportunities being given for the mentally challenged to show case their talents.

+1 on this! Good intentions are to be commended, but this is such a sensitive subject that the expression of those good intentions should also be very well thought out. As Nick says, it is very easy to put your foot in your mouth with this one!viswanathmysore wrote:And I know some guys who may think of hauling the organisers for using the term PARALLEL . Re: Carnatica presents CarnaTech 2011
Dear Friends
Thanks for all the responses. However, firstly the event is being organised by Rotary club of Madras Coromandal, a well established social organisation, which has been doing an event for the physically challenged and have done more than just talking in terms of the infrastructure etc, for some of us to know, they can be seen in reality. Nextly, they have also been honoring the musicians who are unfortunately the victims of nature but who have braved that and have worked a musical life. It is being done on the international day for the physically challenged to inspire many others who may be motivated as well and not to discriminate them. Ranjani and Gayatri are performing this as a charity show for the facilities for a special care centre being created for the visually handicapped, again with noble intentions and not any commercial thoughts in mind.
Carnatica is only assisting in managing the event and not doing with any commercial gains in mind. Again the Carnatech - 2011 is done in the morning. The tribute to Steve Jobs is incidental when we talk of technology and music, and a presentation is done on digital tamburas to i-tamburas etc also digital downloads to i-tunes. As we will be highlighting various technological developments which have revolutionalised the Carnatic music scene. The morning event is free and not ticketed or has no link to the evening event as such except the venue is the same. Apple is not the sponsor for the show nor have we approached any technology company to pay for participation. Entry is free. Even for the Ranjani and Gayatri event, the web streaming that is being planned is free for all, unless someone really feels the cause is genuine they can contribute. The only idea of posting about the event here for to solicit participants for the first virtual quiz where entries from anywhere in the world is accepted.
Nextly, if someone wanted to perform the short recitals and if they are employed in a technology company, we welcome their entries.
The multimedia presentations would be 15 mins each and on diverse topics integrated CM and technology by experts and musicians, The mobile app of Vid. Sanjay Subramanian would be launched. Yessel would be doing the presentation, Vid. Neyveli Santanagopalan would be doing the presentation on Carnatic music learning online pros and con., Vid. Sowmya and Ramanathan Iyer would be doing a presentation on multimedia and web portals in carnatic music, V.Shankarnarayanan on digital tamburas, Sriranjani Santanagopalan would be conducting the first Virtual quiz and a team of experts like Mr. Sridhar and others would be doing technological milestones in Carnatic music.
Finally, any event has multiple angles to how it could be done or how it should be done and each one of us will have our ideas. Thanks for all your views. Our sincere thanks to Rotary for making us a part of this great effort for which they have been working tirelessly. Also spl thanks to O.S.Arun who is the silent motivator who has been organising this for the last 7 years.
Those wanting to register for the quiz or wanting to perform pls feel free to write to us at [email protected]

Re: Carnatica presents CarnaTech 2011
Sri Shasikiran,
Thank you for your response. In reading what you wrote, I found something that troubled me, as someone who has worked with people with disabilities. In particular, you mention that are "victims of nature but who have braved that and have worked a musical life." Calling someone who has a physical disability a victim is a key problem in our culture. To call someone a victim is to imply that they seek, or need our pity. Also, once someone has had some sort of disabling injury or sickness, why should we call it brave that they continue to follow along whatever path/career they have chosen. Should people with disabilities not be expected to reach their full potential? Would any of us, if we were to suddenly become disabled, just stop doing whatever it is we want to do?
We all must work to create an environment that is accessible to people with disabilities and also catch ourselves from making judgements about their capabilities, or intelligence, or attitude. It is natural and understandable to feel pity or sorrow when you see someone who is disabled. It is human nature to put yourself in their position, and imagine all the ways your life would change. But PLEASE do not allow those types of emotions to influence your judgements and interactions with people who happen to be disabled. Research has also shown that we also tend to equate physical disabilities with someone sort of associated mental difficulty. Someone in a wheelchair should be just as a able and capable as any of us to be a musician. In my experience, people who are disabled do not want the pity that is too often directed at them. They would like to be able to lead independent lives, and not be defined by their disability by those they interact with.
I hope it doesn't seem as though I am picking on you. I think the program can be a good idea, and watched much of it yesterday. I was just troubled by that phrase that I saw in your response, and wanted to add my 2 cents. In the US, we have laws that strongly protect the rights of people with disabilities. These rights extend to job discrimination, public transportation, building design, education, and health care. It is my hope we start to see such developments in India, and with your continued hard work, I hope we can make that happen.
For everyone's benefit, I found a short article written by someone with a disability that could provide some insight.

Calling someone who has a physical disability a victim is a key problem in our culture.

Re: Carnatica presents CarnaTech 2011

Thanks to Sriranjani Santanagopalan for being the quiz master and for Neyveli Santanagopalan for being the Celebrity guest Quiz master. Manasiprasad conducted the prelims. Cash prizes were given for the finalists. Apart from spl on the spot rasikas who also had an opportunity for taking the hotspot and winning some prizes. Hope to make this a much bigger event soon. Sankara TV will telecast excerpts the event. Carnatech also had music and technology presentations by Sridharan Sankaran, V.Sankaranarayanan, Yessel narasimhan, Manasiprasad, Ramanathan Narayanan and Guru Neyveli ( who presented a virtual class room). Talents from technology companies gave a short recital which included V.Deepika and Shiva ( Grand son of Trichy Sankaran).
Thanks to hoogli and carnatica.net the event was streamed live from Music academy.
The rotary honoured Sri Guruvayur Durai, the senior percussion maestro on what is known as the World Disabled day. it was a great honour to usher the great artiste and my respects for him is really immence. Now I had mentioned the rotaries effort in recognising and supporting these artistes in a different context and not treated them with any discrimination. Also Ranjani and Gayatri performed in aid to provide more opportunities in terms of infrastructure to the differently abled or the physically challenged. I don't disregard them or think they are less abilities than us.
Lastly I believe in actions and not words and I hope I can do more in real terms than say more. thanks all for the support and also for viewing the web streamed event. Pls note that the web streaming was totally free. No sham or commericial stunt.
