The violin is entirely unnecessary in Carnatic music.
I know you will find this statement hard to believe.
But in November 2010, Swami Ganapathi Sacchidananda's ashram in Mysore arranged a concert
with 108 musicians (in actuality, 113 turned up). The only condition was that only
instruments native to India could be used to accompany the singers. Thus the violin was
ruled out. Veena, flute, nagaswaram and jalatarangam were ruled in.
