Re: MusicAcademy-Slots-2010vs2011-Rasikas-Perspective
There are so many "rasikas" on this forum who claim to swoon at the thought of Smt. Brinda's music.
I am wondering how many will show up for her grandson's concert this evening. One would think that he would be the torch-bearer for her style of singing. Don't forget this is Smt. Brinda's centenary year too.
But then he doesn't have PR behind him!

Harimau,
Thanks for letting us know. I will try and make it to Shri Girish's concert today. I have been learning from him for over an year.
Yes, I wish that his concerts are well attended. He is a serious musician who thinks, breathes, and lives music every moment.

The Awards and Chief Guests Season
Dec 1st listings in The Hindu. It is so thick with inaugurators, lamplighters, presenters and receivers, that it is difficult to spot the details of actual performances of music.

This program is almost completely lost in thick undergrowth of functionality I just mentioned. I had to search hard for it. There is over an hour of speechifying and presentifying programmed to take place, with the concert not listed until 6.45. This may put a lot of people off.fduddy wrote:Tiruvarur Girish, indeed a lovely artist (Grandson of Smt Brinda

Valet parking. You stop the car in front and give the valet the keys. He moves the cars around to make way for cars going in and out and sometimes parks it in a nearby street. Never too far. Cheap at Rs. 10!Nick H wrote:

Started at 7 pm and ended at 9:15 pm. The lovers of the Brinda school were conspicuous by their absence. A bunch of percussion artists were there to listen to veteran T K Murthy.Nick H wrote:.

Very sedate music. No noise, no handwaving or attempt at levitation. Totally enjoyable.

Maybe they were afraid of swooning, falling off their chairs and injuring themselves ? I am surprised nobody showed up even after all this "swoon-feeding" by Harimauharimau wrote:The lovers of the Brinda school were conspicuous by their absence.

I hate it when they levitate. Especially when the mridangist does it when the other artists are still firmly seated. Of course, if I find myself floating an inch above my seat, from sheer bliss, then that is a different matter!harimau wrote:Very sedate music. No noise, no handwaving or attempt at levitation. Seriously: thanks for the good report, and the car parking info.

oops.
my earlier post was after reading Sri Ramnarayan's tongue-in-cheek article.
I just read the review of Girish's concert (thanks VK for the new link). Sri Girish is indeed fortunate to have such titans accompany him.

Harimau,
I heard Girish for the first time in the Cleveland ArAdhanA streaming, here and there. Your talking about his concert makes me wonder if such artistes (young at that) are given enough chances , so that we can listen to them at one venue or the other.
The Sruti blog by Swaroop effectively brings home the mood and the quality of his singing.
Would like to know if he is singing in other venues.

Arasi,
that is exactly the point. Such artists neither are given the opportunity nor there is crowd for their music. I keep saying to myself - they have/enjoy a 'niche' audience. Audience taste has to improve to sit and listen to some good music.
I am not sure if I have mentioned this before. It was an MDR concert in a small town in Kerala. Audience turnout was very low for that concert and some point the total no in the audience side was 5-6. apparently the Sabha president quipped - the artist along with his accompanists and tampura player on stage is more than us in the audience! Yet MDR sang beautifully unperturbed and lost in his own singing. This was narrated to me by the Sabha Secretary in that locality who is my friend's dad.

Thanks, fduddy for that story. The point is--such music will not fade away, and even if the temple pillars need to be counted to make up for the meager number of listeners, it is not bad.
Yes, it's the absentee reasikA's loss.

Re: MusicAcademy-Slots-2010vs2011-Rasikas-Perspective
fduddy, I think there will always be such artistes who are very good but do not draw crowds. As long as there is some space for them to perform occasionally and for some appreciation of their art, I think it is fine, and in fact, it may be counterproductive to have large crowds for such performers. This kind of music needs introspection, calmness in the atmosphere, leisure and commitment to the activity (ie no one should be in a hurry to judge and walk away), and then something can happen, that too not all the time. It is often quite an intensely personalized experience for all present and perhaps each takes away something different. This is different from mass appreciation, which by its very nature can be based on very different sentiments. Perhaps both have their place.fduddy wrote:Arasi,

for the same reason as to why Van Gogh did not sell a painting in his life time .
Some are ahead of the Curve . Some follow the Curve . But many dont see the curve at all . If you dont believe me , just stop and think , next time you see an audience clap in a concert .
The earlier reference to levitation and hand waving is far more sombre than it looks at first appearance . It was not for nothing that generations of musicians have declared that they could employ for an hour in their own concerts , stuff they heard for 2 minutes at a Brinda Concert.
This music is as delicate as it can get . if only all those drums could vanish into thin air . if only wishes were horses ...

Most youtube videos are picked off the air/cable from Jaya-TV's Margazhi Mahothsavam or some similar TV broadcast. If an artist is not featured on TV, you are not likely to find a youtube video for him/her.mahesh3 wrote:

Try taking a videocamera into any auditorium and see the response of the sabha secretary! Then you will understand why there aren't any videos.
PS. The exception was Bombay Jayashri's concert at Sri Krishna Gana Sabha last December. Several video cameras were rolling and many pocket recorders were recording the program, most by NRI admirers of Jayashri. I am sure they got permission from the artist though.

The upcoming artists do get a chance but concert-goers have to think of not going only to concerts of the same old culprits (they are no longer suspects!).arasi wrote:

The Sruti blog by Swaroop effectively brings home the mood and the quality of his singing.
Two years ago, Girish sang at the Academy in the 12 noon slot. Similarly, on a different day at Mylapore Fine Arts, some time after noon, there was an exquisite Sankarabharam alapana by a youngster, which I heard as I was sitting in the auditorium while waiting for the crowd to thin out in the canteen. I went to the sabha office and asked who the singer was and was informed that D B Ashwin is the grandson of T K Rangachary.
One must be willing to listen to what is on offer during various slots. This year, I plan to have lunch several times in various sabha canteens so that I can listen to some of these youngsters. Narada Gana Sabha doesn't count; you can't hear the music from the auditorium but Music Academy, Mylapore Fine Arts, and Parthasarathy Swami Sabha are three venues where you can count on hearing the artists even as you chomp on your food.
Try doing that instead of shooting the breeze with old friends and then going to the evening programs in sartorial splendor and listening to the retreads!
The added advantage is that Parthasarathy Swami Sabha canteen is run by Mountbatten Mani Iyer, whose food I gave the highest rating last year.

Harimau,
That's what I've been doing all along! How many good new singers have I heard by doing that! Hadn't heard of Girish until I heard him in the spring at Cleveland. I'm still not in Chennai. Otherwise, I would have been there at the Academy.
