AIR Sangeet Sammelan - Sanjay Subrahmanyam

Post by classicallover »

Sanjay betrayed lots of expectations for many enthusiasts who were very eagerly waiting to hear the AIR Sangeet Sammelan concert broadcast on 25/11/11. He was in such a hurry to finish off the concert packing it with too much stuff. All we got was a sadistic Saveri, shouting Shanmukhapriya and a bawling Begada. The only somewhat consoling piece was the endpoint Rageshri. The lyrics were murdered sufficiently to leave mincemeat.

The items rendered were :

1. Sami - Varnam - Begada - Tiger Varadachariar
2. Daritapuleni - Saveri - Thyagaraja
3. Kshitija Ramanam - Devagandhari - Dikshitar
3. Kalaya... (?) - Shanmukhapriya - Swati Tirunal
4. ........ (?) - Rageshri - Purandaradasa

Request someone to fill up the gaps please.

Sanjay has lot of theoretical knowledge and should improve his quality of rendering , rather than the repertoire. Otherwise he should only teach maybe.

* I also briefly listened Shunmugapriya onwards.Appeared voice shrunk in the last no.

* One should not be too harsh to comment on SS - still an young artist :(
*I need someone to initiate on the Raga "ragheshri"!?
*And Lakshman&others to list out compositions.

You could have turned down the volume. Try it next time!

Two options exist-the recording could have been done without the mic or the poor rasika listens in mute. :)

It is difficult to post the Puradaradasa songs in rAgEshrI because it could be any song.

The kruti of Puranadaradasaru that Sanjay sang in Rageshri was Dasara Nindisa Beda.

Prior to that, Trichur Narendran on mrudangam and Venkataramanan on khanjari played an excellent tani avarthanam.

S. Prasanna.

I think it was S. Varadarajan on the violin, the poor soul who was left out in this thread...

btw, some other kucheris of this sangeet sammelan series were quite good, the vocalists such as Aswathi from kerala , N Shankar, Kottapalli Vandana from Tirupathi & flute by Mysore Vamsidar. only we donot go gaga over such concerts.. :)

The violinist for that programme was Nagai Sri Muralidharan.

I wouldn't call Nagai Muralidharan 'the poor violinist' ;) It was just an omission when the accompanists were mentioned.I bet it happens often to you, able percussionists, even more!

Sivakami,
This wasn't a 'go ga ga' kind of review ;) It was more of a 'go for a slaughter' kind. The Christmas season with pies
made of mincemeat might have triggered such an imagery--making mincemeat of the artiste!
