I agree with kunthalavarali. Does anyone know who her (Malavika's) gury is ?
I was told that today it would be Suguna Varadachary accompanied by Ranjani Ramakrishnan in today's SBVC channel program. But, instead I listened to this.

Yesterday, 29 Nov, it was Mrs.Mathangi Sathyamoorthy from Thrissur. All the accompanists were also from Thrissur. She sang very well- chaste, classical, without any hangups- I heard Sarasaksha Paripalaya and Pakkalanilabadi. Not seen her in Chennai music circuit. But she is quite popular in Kerala. in Kerala also, I have heard her many concerts.

I am told the quality of kerala audience is much better and informed. Even in small villages and towns, people flock for classical concerts in large nos and stay till the end. That is the respect for the art.CRama wrote:Yesterday, 29 Nov, it was Mrs.Mathangi Sathyamoorthy from Thrissur. All the accompanists were also from Thrissur. As you said her music is chaste, it will be difficult to showcase her talent in chennai!
BTW, I am a proud keralite hailing from Tiruvananthapuram but moved to chennai.

fduddy, Happy to know that you hail from TVM. I also belong to TVM now staying in Chennai. Why don't you reveal your identity to me via mail through the forum. Perhaps we would have met sometimes.

The truncated concert yesterday was a vintage Karaikudi style veena. The main artiste was Santhi Mahesh. yOchanA (darbAr), ninu Ceppa (mandAri), jO jO (nIlAmbari), rAma nI (kharaharapria) were played with remarkable beauty. Kharaharapriya Neraval was noteworthy as it was the pallavi line. Santhi's vocal accompaniment added to the melody. The telecast after 9pm (not at the usual 6 pm) was cut short when the tani started (forewarning of what is to come in the Chennai season!)

Re: Naada Neeraajanam- TTD TV channel - Daily 6.15 pm
Vishnubhatla sisters- Saraswathi and Krishnaveni today presented the concert at Naada Neerajanam. As I had never even heard their name, was not too optimistic when I tuned in right at the beginning of the programme. It turned out to be a superhit.
Started with a Muthuswami Dikshidar kriti "Parameswara" in Nattai. (Probably Nattai is their strength and the best they had was this kriti although it does not align with the Tirumala deity
) There was elaborate swara prastharas- many extra rounds even after a stage when everyone would have thought that it has come to a close. Sriman Naarayana (MS fame) followed.
The main was a brilliant Banturithi- raga Hamsanadam, neraval, swaram - everything perfectly in place. No slips. Very good synchronisation between the two, each complimenting the other. There were several Annamayya kritis. A bhajan type thyagaraja number was the final piece (not my type!). It was an extremely satisfactory concert, especially as it came as a total surprise.
Never heard of a concert by them in Bangalore. I think they are from AP. If only they are Chennai residents, I have no doubt that their popularity will be much more than many other successful sisters.

They are from Vijayawada, a musical family. One of the duo, Smt. Krishnaveni is an A TOP AIR violin artiste.kssr wrote:

Today's Mridangist (Shri. BVS Prasad) is the husband of Smt. Saraswati.
The children of both the sisters are also good violnists and in fact few months ago performed at Nadaneerajanam with
Smt. Krishanaveni being the lead violinist. Very talented kids.
Very quietly they go about their job without much fanfare. They performed few times in chennai in the last couple of years.

kssr,
Thanks for the review. Just wanted to clarify you that it should be "Bantureeti" and not Pandurithi... You can find details of the lyrics and meaning.

KSSR - a small correction - in this kRti, tyAgarAjasvAmi is pleading with rAma to at least treat him like a servant - baNTu rIti (baNTu = servant/slave/kaiAL). panDurIti would destroy the meaning - paNDu rIti would mean 'like a fruit' (paNDu = fruit).kssr wrote:Pandurithi

3 yrs back had heard their concert at Sri Rama MAndira, Malleswaram Bangalore. There were hardly 20 people at the concert.. Did watch their SVBC concert last year. They sang compsotions of Dikshitir.. IT was good.
True. If they were from Chennai they would have been popular..

Today I listened very briefly to Palghat Ramprasad singing Venakatasaila viharini in Hamir. For some reason, SVBC started telecasting in the middle of the concert. He has got great voice. Any idea who is his guru?

Pantula Rama's singing has its own charm for me.
Yes, the makara jyOthi program cut into the beginning of her program. I watched most of it with some interruptions. She sang one song for each kAnDam from the rAmAyaNA. Her intros in telugu were brief and were followed by English translations, to make sense for those who do not know Telugu. When the broadcast began, she was in the middle of the kruti which is in my favorites list: nA morAlagimpavEmi in dEvagAndhAri. Wish I had heard all of it. With the beauty in her singing and that in a voice which I have a special liking for, it sounded very pleasing. Even though it was incomplete, I relished it.
A detailed kAmbOdi followed. AlApanA and mA jAnaki, neraval at rAja rAja vara. Svarams too.
Was it sara sara samarE for a quickie? Was called away then. Her haridAsulu veDala, when I first heard her sing it in a recording was what attracted me to her singing. This time too, it was very pleasing.
Her voice was not in prime form, and we heard her students singing here and there.
Ahiri, that was when I noticed you (way to go! You are such an intelligent student of music who goes about it with fervor. Missed seeing you this season. Were you there at her Indian Fine Arts concert which several of the rasikAs attended? Did not know you were learning from her).
Pantula Rama is one of those few performers who dresses simply. Its being a SankarAnthi program, she was clad in a festive sari, to suit the occasion, I think!
The lady always charms me with her singing

Yes, it was "Sara sara in kuntalavarli" which I did listen to, which is part of Yuddhakanda as per her description. And, when she took up haridasulu Vedala she reminded me of MS doing bhajans.. I did not find violin particularly pleasing for some reason or other:-)

At 8.30 PM, there was a broadcast of nadaswaram concert for few minutes while the title showed as Smt. Usha Padmanabhan-vocal.
I was confused. Fortunately, after few minutes, the scheduled program was shown.
I heard Smt. Usha sing devagandhari, pushpalatika, hindolam, sankarabharam . It was nice.
Tomororow on 20th Jan.there is a veena concert of Smt. Parupalli Sujana,
accompanied by her brother Parupalli Phalgun- mridangam and Sri. A. S. Shankar -Ghatam
I think the recorded concert will be broadcast after the pravachanam/discourse at 8 PM or so.
You can find the profile of the Smt. Sujana at

We were there at the temple along with the artist and the concert started at 6.45 PM after lot of issues with sound setting ! It would have been major issue had it been telecast live.
Even then the artists on stage had no feedback and were playing from instincts !! I was later told by local musicians who play often there that this is a major issue and every artist felt tad disappointed as they can not play their best in that setting ! I hope this will be addressed immediately by the SVBC.
The concert was itself good considering the fact that the artists were not hearing each other !!
The lalitha and todi ragams and krithis were beautiful. After the concert was over at 8.15 PM we were checking with the staff of SVBC when it will be telecast for the general public. They did not have a clue and it was eventually telecast at 12.30 AM on the following day. That left many friends/family disappointed

Vignaraj is famous for singing varnam in many kaalams (6?). I think he is teaching music in Malaysia. Heard him once in a junior concert a few years back. Good artist from Bangalore.

Yesterday it was Smt.Seetha Rajan with her troupe who provided a group performance. With no frills, just the perfect renderings of the masterpieces of our great composers, are a delight to listen to. Many items on Lord Shiva which is unusual in Tirumala. But very good selection of songs. Ardhanareeswaram in Kumudakriya, without any of the fireworks of either TNS or Sanjay, was itself so soothing. Even after so many years of listening CM, the grandeur of the compositions do not cease to amaze me. Embar Kannan gave a true fillip. I forget the mridangam vidwan. J. Vaidyanathan? Very good as usual.
Today was a violin solo. Perfect rendering. Kapi Entha Soukya was main. Once again there was good song selection- mostly lighter ones (Rakthi?). Excellent rendering. Kindly fill in the names of the artists. Not familiar- from AP?

There were a few interesting concerts of late in NN.
First it was a young teenager boy who played violin solo brilliantly. I heard an abheri- Nagumomu? NN kept insisting that it was a Kuchipudi dance
by displaying the imaginary troupe's name. I did n't stay on to find out. If someone knows please enlighten.
Next it was Sri. MS Anantharaman's extended family. MSA as usual was emotionless but was flawless with his violin. At his age looked like Kanchi Paramacharya. There were 9 from the family. Two tambura's were by the d-i- laws of MSA. Son MAK and the other son (without dye) were on either side. Two granddaughters, the senior one greatly resembling Narmada were on their respective father's side. There was a young man on the extreme left next to mridangam. Who could he be. On the extreme right next to ghatam was a grandson. Name? He played a brilliant Kalyani. Theme was violet. Both percussionists and the g.daughters were wearing it. Hope they had a good Srivari darshanam.
Then there was a Vijayalakshmi Subramaniam concert. Did not listen much. Was not so absorbing.

Has he grown a lit bit more now? In NN I recall him to be a slightly taller boy. But 99% he is the person. What mastery! Anything more about him? Guru? Seems to be from the USA- DC?

It was OK concert. She sang a lively todi. There was that O pavanathmaja (misra kalyan, if i heard it right) as the concluding piece. M R Gopinath and Madirimangalam Swaminathan provided good support. (I didn't get the ghatam player's name)

That was Anayampatti Venkatasubramanian, son of Anayampatti Ganesan (Jalatarangam). He is student of MSA/MAS/MAK. He is not part of MSA's familykssr wrote:There was a young man on the extreme left next to mridangam. Who could he be.
So the total family members on the stage were :
MSA
2 sons of MSA
1 grandson of MSA
2 grand daughters of MSA
2 d-i-ls of MSA

Today it was G.Ravikiran. From concert to concert I see him going from strength to strength. Sweeping Keeravani- beautiful range and effortless reach. Extremely pleased to see youngsters from Bangalore performing so well.
