Sanjay gave a typically energetic and fun soaked performance for Kartik Fine Arts.

Some observations:

1. It was a return to some of the "old favorites" for Sanjay and he was just having fun - sometimes bordering on
silly. And the audience lapped it up.

2. Nagai Sriram on the violin rose to the occasion and received thunderous applause several times riding the
master's coattails

3. C.S.Murugabhupathy and Ghatam Kartik provided nice support on percussion and also played an elaborate thani

4. The full 2.5 hour long concert ended with the people in the hall rising up to a standing ovation that continued even as the curtains were coming down.

It is hard for me to accurately describe many of Sanjay's antics given that I am not a performer and have limited domain knowledge Some of these are:

1. Unconventional vocalization of swara sthanas (for eg. tu-tu-tu or so instead of sa)
2. nadai variations during swara prasthara
3. mimicking past great masters in brief flashes

Of course the silliness belies the well-honed asura sadhakam that makes it possible.

The first concert of the MASTER for the season and there was no disappointment. The only disappointment (just like last year at the same venue for the same Karthik Fine Arts) was the duration. Just when the RTP was gaining ground, it came to an unexpected end. This happened with the Charukesi RTP last year.
The Kalyani was astounding and the Bhoopalam (a real surprise) alapana was of a very high quality. As mentioned earlier, there was a particular exchange b/w the MASTER and Nagai Sriram at the very end of the Kalyanai alapana and it brought a spontaneous applause for Nagai Sriram when he reproduced it.

A 6pm concert is the one that can really go on till 9:30pm and whet the appetite of die-hard fans of the MASTER !

"Ethanai kOti inbam vaiththai " is the verse from BharathiyAr. Interestingly, it is also in Desh only. (as sung by Rajkumar Bharathi). This line itself is a fun.

Very soon he will soon have a pallavi as "ethanai laksham (lakh) inbam vaithai" ethanai pattu laksham (10 lakhs) etc.....

Sanjay continues to set the bar....and considering he fashions himself after the "Thala Dhoni" - he is starting to get grey as well. The current, relentless, roller-coaster hoopla that the carnatic year has taken....with pretty much artists having to perform globally and relentlessly and compete crazy - and for the most part, them being subject to taunts thru mostly ridiculous reviews on here - scares me. In that sense, it's a good thing the ticket prices are increased, and hopefully artists make the money.

Nagai Sriram remains one of the best - and his match with Sanjay is a welcome relief to an extremely talented young man who needs the encouragement and the stage to show his talent.

I am not able to find any fun in " Koti " of Bharathi's line.To make it funnier it is hinted that we may soon have laksham and pathu laksham inbham.These numbers are i think smaller than koti. Is it the contention that the bliss of future society will decrease and then increase thus giving room for great "fun".Or does it mean that a line from Bharathi or any other composer should not be taken for RTP?

One of the Sanjay-isms of late is that towards the end of the alapana of the main raga, he sings some lilting sangatis of a lighter variety that precipitates a spontaneous buzz in the auditorium. Nagai Sriram was astute enough to remember this and reproduce it towards the end of his alapana and the crowd was bowled over

Sanjay sang 'Ethanai kOti inbam' and not 'Ethanai aayiram inbam' in the concert. I think it was written/noted in error!
