There is always something unique and exclusive about each of Smt. Vijayalakshmy Subramaniam’s concerts, and we were in for a treat at this concert for SAFE – with an appealing assortment of ragams and compositions. The Kalpana Swarams in the Kanchipura Kshetra song Ekamresha Nayike were sung in the Charanam phrase that has the Vageyakkara mudra – ‘Paamara Jana Palini Guruguha Janani’ . Sriranjani was beautifully elaborated with many inspired phrases hovering around ‘ni’ . In the song Sogasuga Mridanga Talamu, we do not often hear Kalpana Swarams in the charnam phrase - “Navarasa yuta kritiche”. In the swarams , Smt. VS brought out a fantastic variation of different combinations of sargams and kanakku – the audience were able to experience Navarasa or even more flavors of sriranjani . Mayamma was preceded by a verse from the Meenakshi Pancharatnam by Adi Sankara, woven beautifully into a ragamalika of Varali, Sama , Ahiri , with a very imaginative transition between the ragams.
Sankarabharanam was sung in all splendour, and the line chosen for Neraval in the main piece was “Paarkadal Tharum Kripakari” in the Charanam. Kalpana Swarams were very creatively sung, employing phrases ending with Sa-Pa and Sa-Pa-Sa . This was followed by an engaging Thaniavathanam by Shertalai Sri Anathakrishnan and Sri Sethuraman.
The main piece was followed by a soulful rendition of a Kabir Das Bhajan in Purya Dhanashree. The concert concluded with Arul Seyya Vendum Ayya and a sprightly Nottu Swaram – Vande Meenakshi.
