What a concert it was! Neela Ramgopal surprises me every time, though I know I will be in for surprises. Her imagination, based on years of practice, and her search in the realms of creativity all along, is her own trade mark--all this in an old timer and a woman vocalist from the era where going beyond traditional boundaries was quite uncommon. I can only think of MLV who was her senior, of course.
As for the tilang song, it's new in the sense Sumitra Nitin has sung it in the new CD. The song is twenty years old, perhaps. I was surprised to hear Neela sing it, because she has recorded another tilang song of mine--varuvEn enRavan kURiyadum kanavO? She fancied singing this one it seems--so had a quick conference with Sumitra yesterday on the phone (?) and practised it to sing it today! Yes, the lady is full of surprises
Yes, Pattamma. I was disappointed that the turn out was poor. The accompaniment was rich. Charulatha was joined by Arun Prakash (I hear him after quite some time, but this season, twice within a few days--playing for Gayathri Venkataraghavan at NAda Inbam and this evening. Both times, excellent playing as usual, and not at all in the minimalist mode which at times he adopts

Rajganesh's Khanjira embellished the concert. Just before the RTP, wondered if she was having trouble with her voice for a moment, but how she sang the pallavi!
The team gave their all and we felt privileged as if we were at a house concert.
Vidushi Neela Ramgopal is going to be awarded Academy's Sangeetha Kalacharya. I am not going to be in Chennai for that, but I'm glad I could hear her today
