I have heard Arasi's latest CD in full yesterday! I am very happy to hear the keerthana's again, some of them were presented in concert by Sumitra. I am particularly very happy about Kamobodhi keerthana, and hindolam bhajan. I heard them more than once, and bhajan is indeed lilting.

Arasi - can you please provide lyrics for shya aye man behlaye... the lyrics are very simple, but still please provide the lyrics.

arasi!!

that was a fantastic evening; an elastic evening too, since sri neyveli anna, ms. ygp, ravikiran, cienu, tkb and many others made themselves flexible to attend the grand function amidst their busy programs :)

vvs mama and ms. ygp spoke well. special thanks to sumitra who made RK sing her own compsition, breaking the calm position that arasi chose to stay.

i enjoyed every (first and) second of the event. we did group photos with ganeshkant, hariharan, nick too.

i have played for vidhya subramaniam, sumitra nitin, sankari krishnan, rithvik raja and salem sriram and i feel each concert needs a review. finding it difficult to write more. see you all sooner and awaiting the photos and review from beloved members.

bye for now,

That was a special evening to have met Arasi and her Arasan along with other forumites.Though I have seen Nick many times got a formal introduction.Nick is a warm person and good to be with someone like him on the onset of winter

Sumitra sang pretty well.Ireally got engrossed in the music so much so that I didn't even get the thinking of a review.Arasi's songs had good lines like 'gnanamum mOnamum aruLvAi'.The vasantha song was a foot tapping no.in rupakam and the main in tOdi in misra chapu was v.good.The sub main in PantuvarAli was well done by Sumitra esp.the rAgam in all the 3 octaves.Nagaraj & Ambika Prasad provided excellent accompaniment.

Probably I would like to tune at least a song of Arasi.Let me see !

That was a master stroke on the part of Sumitra who managed to coax a reluctant Arasi to sing a few of her own verses. :)
She then requested the audience to listen to Arasi and subsequently listen to her sing the same line and gauge for themselves how much is "lost" in the transition.!
Arasi sang an amazing stanza from inidE vandaruLvAn kandan in Reethigowla. It is always a pleasure to hear a composer sing his or her own creation as we get to feel the spontaneous outpouring of emotion which even the best of singers can never hope to replicate. That's what Sumitra meant.

Nice to read the Hindu article on Arasi's CD release. Looks like Sumithra did a wonderful job. Good to hear that Arasi was made to sing! She is not just a composer, but a good singer too. Congratulations!

very nice pictures. thanks VK for posting them.

9060: The person on the left with VVS and Arasi is Smt YG Parthasarathy not Jayalakshmi Santhanam. Same in 9030.
I went to her school for 14 years from LKG to XIIstd, so the face is indelibly etched in my brain!

9082: I also noticed Vijayalashmi Subramaniam in the second row, behind Smt T Rukmini.

9060 and 9030. My bad. Fixed. Added the Vijayalashmi Subramaniam info to 9082. Thanks Mahavishnu.

Also, updated 9168 with the name of the tampura artist, Sri. Lakshminarayanan.

Stating the obvious, my contribution is just that of the messenger/clerk, all credits to the photographer and the lovely and cheerful subjects!

VK,
Thanks 'janitor', for playing other roles in helping me out!

Mahavishnu,
Thanks for spotting Vijayalakshmi Subramaniam. I did mention her presence earlier, but missed seeing her in the photograph.

In the Rasikas group picture, Pattamma (Hari!), next to Nick, and Ganeshkanth (seated between Krishnan and me). Cienu and TKB had left by then. Couldn't spot them in any other pictures. Haven't seen the video yet. I will find them there, I think. The one next to JS is cousin Padma Srinivasan, a very good singer (Rukmini Sundarajan's daughter). She has sung with JS, and has been hiding so far, but is starting to sing solo again, after many years! Next to her is our chittappa Santhanam, little chitti's husband.Holding the tambura in center (on stage) is Sujatha Vijayaraghavan.

In the musical family picture, you find Sangeetha Acharya (and friend) vidushi Neela Ramgopal.

Photos taken by Chella (close ups) and the rest by his assistant Prince.

Arasi,Sumitra & Team
Wonderful Photos , nice to place a visual image of Smt Anantalakshmi sadagOpan, and a galaxy of musicians, particularly very nice to see musicians like Shri Alleppey Venkatesan and SmT t Rukmani, whose face rekindles great memories .

Arasi
In the last photo where each of rasikas friends are seated on the stage , I see all of them have their feet grounded , only Krishnan Sir is just partly removing his chappals and getting ready to jump.I remember he telling me on Jan 01st,2011 , if Rajee asks me to jump , I only ask the height .( hope you get that drift,ahA just kidding). Great photos and there is no near repetition of frames .

Are there any photos where you are speaking ?

Will try to upload (with a little help from my friends) clips from Sumitra's concerts...

This almost looks like an Academy award function with a galaxy of stars attending. It is nice to see from the attendance that arasi is getting recognized by the performing community which she richly deserves. As someone already mentioned she is yet another Ambujam Krishna to whom she is related except that her lyrics are very simple (no tongue twisters) and melodious based on popular ragas. Let us hope that performers start singing them which will encourage her to bring out many yet which are dormant in her books. Now that three Cds are out let us start reqesting them at concerts so that the CM community starts taking note of a vaggeyakara who has arrived!

I agree with CM Lover!! Arasi,I regret I missed the function-saw you @ the Radha's(MSS) function but as you were surrounded by "big wigs" I shied away !! The loss is mine!! The pics are radiant--thanks to the Rasikas "Gang".Missed you@ Nageswaran's house!!
I think to follow up on CML"s suggestion for starters, why not consider my application to be the pupil(along with Nirmala)!! We can start around one of my long-deferred-visit to Boston!!!

SSI once asked GNB as to WHY he (GNB) does not sing his own compositions in his concerts to "popularise" them!!--to which GNB is reported to have replied,"If they --meaning the compositions-- have " legs" they would become "Prabhalyam"(popular)!!!

Let us(the forumites) provide the "legs"!!!

Well said MKR. I am sure arasi's compositions have 'legs', nay, wings. But they should first be listened to. Olden days all the popular songs we knew came from listening to the Radio, especially Mayilvahanam courtesy of Ceylon Radio :D
Now-a-days the best is to listen privately to the Cds. I urge all our members to get these Cds and play them to their friend during gatherings and occasions. Best is to listen to them while driving..it will be soothing...

CML and MKR,
Thank you both for your (more than) kind words. MAS flourishes, among us ;) to counterbalance some of the other stuff which we occasionally come across. But enough! Don't let it all get to my head!
Compared to many other writers and composers, I seem to be doing well of late, when it comes to recognition. How many men and women there have been, who have lived their lives with no recognition at all? Thanks to Rasikas.org--I need no other promoters--not that I'm looking for them! As for my songs, they are being noticed more these days, than in all the twenty years or more that they have been coming.

MKR,
No, I was not hobnobbing with VIPS that morning when Cienu's mother was being honored :( Though I was tired after all the excitement of the previous evening, I got there early, in order to find a place in the hall (I'm not tall like you!) in the rows immediately behind the VIP rows. I did not even stop to greet Cienu's mother because I knew they had to rush home, and get ready to go to KGS for the afternoon concert of Aishwarya.
I did look around the hall to spot forumites a couple of times, but didn't notice any of them.

Thanks for saying that you and N want to learn my songs. I'm flattered. Warning: you have to rope in those tAlams, which elude me forever!

Thanks for the pictures. Getting to know the forumites from these photos. The pictures are very clear. So happy that many VIPs came to hear Sumithra sing Arasi's songs. I second cmlover that more artists should sing Arasi's compositions in their concerts. The songs are very melodious and meaningful. Feel bad, I missed it.

I missed you that day, as well :(
Guess what. Sundara Rajan (from your part of the US) was there--so nice of him to come, having arrived just the previous day I think, not minding the jet lag! They were there, rasikas from our part of the world--also the jet-lagged couple from Canada--Lakshman and Shantha!
