vidushi neela ramgopal's concert yesterday at 'nada inbam' was awesome.Throout the duration of the concert,not a leaf moved.It was an
aesthetic treat and an object lesson to any aspiring yound performer.The shivan varnam in hindolam set the tune for what was to come.ninne bhajana in nattai was neatly executed .then there was a brief but sparkling alapana of 'mukari' followed by Thyagaraja's
'muripemu kalige' wherein the saint in three charanas describes in detail the factors that inspired him to compose nearly 700 gems of krithies which to this day are remembered in reverence.It is a pity she sang only the first charanam like others.The exchange of kalpana swaras were very gripping and the team effort by mukund on violin,SREE J Balaji(can we call him jr vellore ramabadran-what sowkhyam!)on mridangam,kvg on kanjira was remarkable till the end.The slokam in brindavanasaranga followed by the eternally charming Dikshitar composition 'rangapuravihara' took the audience to
cloud 9.The main raga was shanmugapriya.Here NRG ;s vidwat was glowing like 'karthigai deepam' and the raga had instant appeal and made us long for more.The song was 'maamava karunya' of 'swati thirunal' made famous by semmangudi mama.the thani was spectacular and the fact all those present did not move during thani speaks about its quality and precision.
I can not but wonder and respect this vidushi who @76, could give us such a quality time.I recall Thyagaraja's very opt statement
''SITA VARA SANGEETHA GNAANAMU DAATHA VRAYAVALERA'
May God give us more and more of such musical experience.Natarajan.J

I missed this concert
Not easy to sing two concerts in a row at her age, I thought but this seems to be as good as the one she gave the previous evening at Brahma Gana Sabha. I have heard her sing shanmukhapriya before. She loves to sing it and it shows.

Her next appearance on stage this season is at the Academy to receive the honor...

Arasi, you should be more familiar with her (and other vidwans her age and older) exploits. She sang on Apr 16 (Shri SV Krishnan's birthday) this year at Naada Inbam, and again on Apr 17 in Bangalore for Rama Seva Mandali. Prof TN Krishnan played a concert on 11 Nov in Kolkata for ITC Sangeeth Sammelan, and another one in memory of MMI at Krishna Gana Sabha, Chennai on 12 Nov. http://www.thehindu.com/opinion/columns ... 635735.ece

rbharath : thanks for the list, sri Natarajn - thanks so much for the lovely review, makes me feel awful to have missed this glorious concert - the energy Neela Mami brings into the concert is simply unparalleled, we always say she' actually @ 30 years of age.
