It was a largely underwhelming concert for me. The manOdharma was very light throughout the concert: the one raga alapanai was almost purely scalar and hinged too much on the same phrases repeated in every octave, and the kalpanaswaras were just kaNakku oriented. The rendition of manavyAla was particularly gimmicky, with umpteen sangatis in the AP/C. DwijAvanti, however, was played quite beautifully and was the one high-point of the concert.
The violinist's violin did not seem to be tuned correctly. He had trouble with higher octave notes, but his A string also seemed flat. His fingering was inaccurate too. His kharahapriya ragam was odd to say the least, with flat notes aplenty. Melakkaveri Balaji played with decent anticipation, though he was overexuberant at times. Sometimes, it is musically appropriate to just END the kriti or the part of the kriti when the main artiste does, without playing decorations for a few more cycles. Pudukkottai Ramachandran just blended into the background for the most part.

bilahari - Did you come for the concert? If you did you should not write something out without even a song list being accurate.
For e.g Smt. Nirmala announced the Bharatiyar song as "Thedi Unnai" and the also mentioned about the fact that it was tuned by Dr BM S
I am sharing my perspectives of what I experienced. I was enthralled by the concert. A superb rendition of the varnam, that set the stage for what was to follow. JayaJayaa was sparkling, a superb array of swarams aesthetically strung together. The first few songs were an indication of her control on the instrument, adept rendition of the songs, it told me she is/will be a trend setter.
I was thinking to myself that her performances will not be on the beaten track.
The nalinakanti - true to the emotion of the ragam - she did a fab job in rendering it aesthetically-gleeful. I always wonder why is it we cannot open our hearts out and dance for such songs in concerts. I was ready for it, but for sure I would have been thrown out
)
The dwijavanti - splendid -- I just loved it.
A violin accompanying veena --- I saw this for her other concerts also - this is also why I call her music not on the beaten track.
The violinist tread the path of accompanying the veena masterfully. The spacing (instead of the incessant bowing) allowed for a lot of contrast and beauty to emerge.
Then the main piece was K.Priya ragam and the thanam maligai. The pace at which the ragam was initiated was brilliant.
I felt the ragam was handled with ease and the beauty of the personality of the ragam was out there for everyone to see and soak in.
I always believe an artist has a mind of thier own, they are moulding the ragam from thier perspective. "Bilahari" you got a K Priya from Ms Nirmala Rajasekhar. There were thisram and kandam thanam which added to the verve.
As an artist I am emphathizing with Ms. Nirmala a bit to see Bilahari say it was only kanakku. As an artist I understand if Smt Nirmala had played without kanakku bilahari would have written there was no kanakku. An artist's life is all about what is not there looks like.
First of all hats off to have played a edam that is 9 units off samam in rupakam. I felt the math was very well disguised and beautifully rendered.
You deserve a lot of credit for attemtping this on the veena.
wow - Durga was brilliant, thillana again made me dance!
As I have described my experiences above, every song had a stamp or perspective of her own - - - did some one say "light" manodharma ....??
I should disagree.
I got to say the complete package was a concert with a "BOLD" Nirmala stamp. I feel you are a trail blazzzer. I can hear a SB in you, may be the world will know sooner rather than later
