R. Vedavalli presented the inaugural concert in the Academy at 7.00 PM on 15 Dec 11. She was accompanied by RK.Sreeramkumar on the violin, K.Arun Prakash on the Mridangam and Guruprasad on the Ghatam. The list of songs.

The Academy's 85th music festival started with the auspicious concert of Vedavalli
Mami - the most appropriate musician for an institution of Academy's stature to begin its festival with. The kriti in Dhanyasi was rendered in her usual style sans any unnecessary prayogams. The Dhanysi kriti was decorated with neraval taking just two words -Syamakrishnasodari raave. It was a highly aesthetic exercise and swaras in two kalams followed. Next was an unheard kriti in Sree ragam by Kavikunjara bharathi. The song had an attractive chittaswaram. After Devaadideva, quite surprisingly Neelambari was taken for elaboration. Raga elaborations were shared by her disciple Smt Sumithra Vasudev who also has blossomed into a matured singer in the lines of her guru. The alapanas in the higher register was handled superbly by the disciple which brought glow in the face of the Guru. A rare song of Deekshitar- Sidheeswaraya Namasthe-was sung ornamented with swaras in two kalams. After the filler in Asaveri, raga Kambodi was taken up for elaboration which was handled by the Guru shishya team commendably involving the time tested sangathis for the ragam After the customary slokam -Sathchithasayee, the kriti of Thyagaraja O Rangasayee was presented in a very appropriate kalapramanam with all the sangathis in tact. Detailed swaras were presented. Ragam Shanmugapriya was taken up for the pallavi. The pallavi was in Khanda triputa and it was presented with right balance to all the aspects of the RTP. Mami chose a padam in Sahana for next item before embarking on a slokam in Kedaragowla, Hamsanandi,Kapi,Madhyamavathi and concluded with Adaikkalam adaikkalam in Madhyamavathi. It was highly classical concert as one would except from Vedavalli Mami.

There was good support from the accompanists. RK Sreeramkumar excelled in his violin essays of the ragams and swara returns. Each phrase was highly soaked in raga bhavam and stricting to the traditions. Arun Prakash embellished the concert to a great extent anticipating every sangathi of Mami and never intruding in her kalpanas. The thani lasted for 15 minutes and it was very well presented by both the percussion artists. An excellent concert for the start of MA festival.
