Sugauna Varadachari, Mylapore Fine Arts

Post by kachapah »

Mylapore Fine Arts
9.30 a.m. - Suguna Varadhachari - Vocal, Akkarai Subbulakshmi - Violin, Kallidaikurichi Sivakumar - Mridangam, Nerkunam Shankar - Kanjira

Song List

1. Teradiyaka radha - Gowla Pantu
2. Budham Aarshrayami - Natakurinji, misra jati jampe talam
3. Aparadha - lathangi
4. Kandrin kuralai kettu - Raga - Mukhari / Tala - Mishrachapu - Neelakantha Sivan
5. Rama ni yada - Kharakhara priya - ragam, neraval at prema rahitida, swaram
6. RTP in Poorvi Kalyani, misra jati ata tala -
The ragams in Pallavi were Arabi, Thodi, Kamboji and Saranga. I found Saranga particularly beautiful!

7. Tillana - gambhira vani - TK govinda rao composition? (not sure)

We got there at the end of Lathangi because mom got stuck in traffic. It is Wednesday and perhaps the reason why Mami sang Budham Aashrayami. The Kharakarapriya ragam was relaxed in pace and for a beginner like me, i could tell it was kharakarapriya without a doubt when she opened the ragam. Akkarai akka's response was indeed beautiful.
Pallavi was the following:
Kaveri Rangane
Kasutri Rangane nine
Vaibhoga Rangane
Sri Rangane
Bhooloka, Vaikunta, Vaasane

Lovely list, with a very mature selection of ragas and compositions. We can expect nothing less from this doyenne. The pallavi being on ranganAtha, has used rAga-s from tyAgarAja's srirangam pancaratnam, and also suitable elements from the lyrics of the same quintet of songs.

kachapah, others,

Are you sure she didn't sing Arabhi and dEvagAndhAri both in the ragamalika swarakalpana?? That would complete the set.

Misra jathi Ata tala. Nice tala choice for an RTP. I recall someone mentioning that Ata thala Pallavis can have two Arudis. The usual single Arudi one is like a Question and Answer ( metaphorically ) with the Q in the pUrvAngA. That is what leads me to wonder how Ata thala pallavis will be structured and how it will come across ( especially misra jathi providing quite a bit of vistharam )

How was Smt. Suguna Varadachari's pallavi structured? Single arudi or dual arudi? Was one still the primary? Thx

kachapah, If it is indeed misra jathi ata, then the splits are 7 + 7 + 2 + 2. Where were the arudhis?
