Re: N Ramani, Karthik Fine Arts 17 Oct 2011
Srikant, the concert was held in December and not October! Also, the rAgamAliga was bArO kriSnayya.
I thought it was a beautiful concert, though it concluded within 1.5 hours. Every piece was played immaculately, with pristine shruti shuddam, which immediately elevates any concert to a higher plane. The manOdharma components were all concise, with a few rounds of swaras in bEgaDa, and crisp alapanais of Ananda bhairavi, dharmavati, and mOhanam.
The Ananda bhairavi alapanai by both Ramani and MC was the highlight of the concert for me. Particularly, NR's ability to weave several piDis together in elongated but coherent phrases was striking, and he didn't need to exploit G3 and N3 to move us with his essay. MC responded with phrases NR had not covered, so the two of them presented a pretty complete picture of the rAgam together.
I enjoyed the dharmavati too, but mOhanam is not my favourite ragam by a distance, so I zoned out a bit. LGJ's bEhAg tillAna provided a nice conclusion to the concert.
The percussionists were both capable and maintained the calm atmosphere created by Sri Ramani throughout the concert. The tani was also crisp.
