The Fat Ghost makes its appearance

Post by harimau »

Sri Parthasarathy Swami Sabha, Dec 16, 2011

The Duelling Abangists - Vocal
H N Bhaskar - Violin
Manoj Siva - Mridangam
N Guruprasad - Ghatam

The title says it all! The Fat Ghost got the most applause. I was tempted to get up and dance!

Didn't make any notes but who cares. All the important things came at the end and I remember both of them!

Neranammithi - Kanada Ata tala Varnam
Charanu Siddhi Vinayaka - Sowrashtram - Misra Chapu
Thoomani Maadatthu - Hameerkalyani - Adi
Raga rathna malika - Reethigowlai - Nice alapanai preceded the krithi.
Entamuddo - Bindumalini - Adi. Elaborate alapana.
---------------------
Mutthuk Kumarayyane - Sankarabharam - Rupakam - (Main piece and so got extended alapana and swarams and the tani avarthanam)

Viruttham in Keeravani, -------, and Khamas.

Theruvathu Eppothu(?) - Khamas

Meera Bhajan - Piloo

The Fat Ghost Song. The vocalists received a long list of requests and they said they have avoided singing this song on two previous accasions but would sing it this time so as not to disappoint the audience. The audience was not disappointed!

Mangalam.

Is this supposed to be referring to Ranjani and Gayathri?

And also, why do you keep going to these concerts if they irk you so much? When I know that a certain type of concert is going to get on my nerves, I just avoid it. I find it much simpler.

This question was raised a year ago.

And my answer was "sociological research". That still holds. Plus my need to stay on top of current events.

If the topic of "Adum Deivam" can be customized (sorry for the IT jargon) to include typical Mumbai processsion song like Ganpati Pappa Moria, then why not we embrace the fat ghost or the big ghost !!! I would prefer to show solidarity with Mumbai by eating Vadapav rather than singing Ganpati Papa Moria in a carnatic (?) concert !
After reading the topic "Adum Deivam" I had thoughts about the immortal Kamboji krithi of Papanasam Sivan, Chidambaram deity, Natarajar ...... how random and unrealted where those thoughts !!! If that is fine then FAT GHOST is also fine !!!

harimau,
Curious to know whether you learned anything new, this year, on the matter. Also, I was wondering whether one is allowed to send a chit to the artiste requesting them NOT to sing something! You might want to explore that possibility. I haven't heard this particular piece except on YouTube, and to me, it seems quite a good song.

narayan - there is a downside to such a chit. 90% of people in RG's concert might send a chit to NOT sing ANYTHING other than "Fat Ghost".. Popular opinion will ofcourse win :)

English Note.

LOL! Maybe Arasi, Punarvasu and Ganeshkant can team up and come with 'pADa vENDAmE' to the varNa meTTu of pADa vENDumE ishaip-pAvin poruLai nanguNarndu of Sri MMDD!

I do not know what the problem with that song is for you Nick, but I vaguely recall you mentioning that someone you respect diss'd that song. Understandable.. And that says how well Suryaprakash should have sung that song.

Narayan's brilliant idea is sinking in. We have to try it sometime just to see the artist's reaction :)

Ravi,
Here it is:
Sing as pADa vENDumE in hamsa nAdam by M. M. Dandapani Desigar.

pADa vENDAme! iSai pADa vENDAme!
pADip pADi pULittup POnavai--ini (pADa vENDAme!)

pATTum poruLum poruttamAga pINaindirundAlum
pazhaiya TIkkaDai grAmaphonaip pOla (pADa vENDAmE!)

pazhaiya puLiyaik karaittuk karaittu, pAvin azhagaik kuRaittuk kuRaittu--
adilum Azh poruL illAp pADalai, enRO araitta
mAvin dOsaiyAi aDukki aDukki vazhangiyE--please, (pAda vENDAme!)

Nick,
Noting the one English word in a tamizh pATTu (if S is helping you read it) should not put you off, as with the English note!

Ahh, yes! Dr John Marr: "It has no musical merit whatsoever!" Well, it's a catchy tune, and I suppose that, in itself, is 'musical merit.' Suryaprakash uses it as a vehicle for his own musicality and energy: other singers leave me feeling that it would be ok at 25% of the length! A once-is-enough song, but a typical earworm melody; it is in my head right now!

Thankfully, it does not get too much exposure, but it is neat that the don't-sing-paper idea came up here --- because it has actually crossed my mind to write "please don't sing English note!"

Bravo Arasi....I have not heard the MMD song pADa vENDumE so far, now I want to hear it!

Here is an attempt from my side in the spirit (!) of this thread. This is in the same tune as kANa vENDAmO of shrI Papanasam Sivan, one of my all time favourite songs. (Disclaimer: I have absolutely nothing against abhangs, and do enjoy them in carnatic concerts).

P: pADa vENDAmE ini pADa vENDAmE
oru chITTu tandE ummai rasikar kETpinum

A: kAdil abhangam shuRRi shuRRi vandAl vEdanai Agum bhayankara talaivali

C1: vaiyattilE nalla pEigaL irundAlum aiya! dayai sheyyum fat ghost adanai

C2: OTTai uDaisal abhanga(m) veRRu bhajan kETTu rasikargaL OTTam piDikkumun

I do not understand why that is. But it is hard to argue such points, I will have to take it as just his opinion and not some explainable analysis of a scholar.

Yup, I initially checked out the thread to figure out what the heck a 'fat ghost' might be. Coming from Harimau, I was wondering if it might be his pet name for a certain performer...

Arasi
Thanks for that superb lyrics. Any audio available?
sridhar_rang
Very nice adaptation to the sriranjani masterpiece of MMD.
Do try rendering it and post the audio..
I am tempted too but my voice has been ruined by the recent flu attack.
In fact this song can become the oft-requested through chit as a panacea against 'abhangs'....

Oh no. Imagine the uproar! The mods mail boxes would have been flooded with protests and the thread would have been closed, had that been the case :)
