Palghat Ramprasad: Devagaandhari at its full splendour
Palghat Ramprasad's concert for kapali fine arts was at its splendid best.......The devagandhari piece in particualr, Enneramum (am hearing it after so many years) - the ragam, neraval and the mere rendering of the song in KVN's style --- it was such a shame that the concert hall was barely 70% full........Excellent voice (both upper and lower octaves - have not heard this kinda voice from the present generation of youngsters), traditional style 100%......Dhurmargacha, and Madhayai (vasantha - main), were other detailed pieces.......
As much as (I think) I have a bias towards such masculine voices, it takes guts and enormous sadhagam and some natural gift to boldly handle ragams such as devagandhari......long live...
(the rest rooms were horrible, to say the least, and no canteen facilites either at sastri hall)

Common man,
A review is always welcome--however, to name the artiste in the title of the review helps the readers and the performer
As for the toilet facilities, well, in the past years, we have been warned against this venue here at Rasikas.org! In fact, it's one of those venues which inspired the bucket-and -mop set to protest against the state of toilets in sabhas. This one also got critiicized for the green room toilet!

@Arasi: Your suggestions are well taken - will incorporate them from my next posts. But to be honest, at my age, I was a bit overcome with emotions about the Devagaandhari that I just lost a bit of direction on the postings...
The protest is interesting.....

Deva gaanam indeed! I was one of the fortunates to be there when it showered music. Will give a detailed 'uruppadi' list later tonight...For now i will mention I heard swaras for Mandari (paraloka bayamu) after a long long time - (I'm not a regular in the concert circles so could be missing a commonplace event!). Very crisp, rapid and just the right duration! Stops with the audience wanting more...that is a hard to master knack in my books! The 'arase...en arase' neraval is still ringing...

Concert list of Palghat Ramprasad:
Abhogi Varnam
rarama Inti (typically in KVN style)
Dhurmargacha - definitely reminded me of Madurai Mani Iyer, though the Kalaprama PRP chose was a lot slower
Endhupodhura - saveri - hearing it after several years; last heard DKJ sing it at MA in 1980's
Enneramum - as somebody had mentioned - Deva Gaanam
Paraloka Bayamu - Mandhari
Madhayai (again hearing it after several yrs since I heard KVN sing it)
forgot this one song (this was coupled with my rest room experience)
Bhavayaami (terrific briga's and sangathis)
Hope he can maintain the same level of traditional pandhathi, paadandharam in particualr, through out.......waiting to hear his next concert, for sure

Awesome list - @CommonMan - Thanks for providing the list sir. Unfortunately I couldn't attend the concert due to personal reasons and will miss the 23rd concert too.
Please could you post the list and your review of the next concert too.
Ramprasad's talent to sing ragas such as a Devagandhari, Dwijavanthi etc with the same ease of Thodi, Kalyani is mind blowing. Plus his Sruthi sudham coupled with his brilliant voice creates an excellent experience for all listeners.
Thanks
T

Palghat Ramprasad is an excellent vocalist; his voice has such timbre, depth and intensity. I am glad that he is performing this season.
Commonman, thanks for starting this thread. Could you please add the artiste's name to the topic of this thread, so the discussion doesn't get buried? It would be easier for us (and search engines) to find this discussion..

I feel kalyANi is an extremely tricky rAgam. I'd say tODi is trickier than dvijavanti too.Ramprasad's talent to sing ragas such as a Devagandhari, Dwijavanthi etc with the same ease of Thodi, Kalyani is mind blowing.

@srikant1987 - I agree. I said that purely because, while the guidance available to sing Kalyani and thodi are aplenty as against the guidance available to sing Devagandhari or dvijavanthi.

@Mahavishnu: The name of the artist deserves, every bit, to be in the title...
@thathwamasi: you definitely missed a grt concert....will post the concert list and a review for the 23rd concert...wud love to hear PRP sing dhwijavanthi or devagandhari again on the 23rd......
The song that I forgot was the javali "chelinenetlu" - I now remember this after reading another thread about an artist mishandling this piece....this is probly not the place to compare and contrast

Thx to one of the attendees to have pointed out that I missed to include "Abhayambike" (kedaragowla) in the list..it was sung after ranjani, and before saveri.

Is Palghat Ramprasad & TV Ramprasad one and the same? Maybe not?

The item before bhavayami was cheli nenetlu (paras) and the finish was patiki harati re (surati).

@hamirkalyani123:
Palghat (Dr) Ramprasad is the grandson of Legendary Palghat Mani Iyer..and T V Ramprasad, I belive, is from Bangalore.....I have heard both....In my humble opinion, the vidwat and voice of PRP outclasses T V Ramprasad's....
I also gathered from one of the websites that Palghat Ramprasad has been performing since 1988, and T V Ramprasad started only in 90's....so in that regard PRP is much more senior...Age wise, PRP is in his 30's and TVR in 40's - correct me if I'm wrong (on the age part)...TVR's wife is a dancer, and he sings for her performances too......sounds like the "aaru vidyaasangal" in Kumudam magazine??? sure enough they are different people.....
