Re: Pantula Rama - Charsur Arts Foundation 21 December 2011
I had heard some short recordings of Dr Pantula Rama and had been impressed so I made it a point to attend her concert this season. I wasn't disappointed.
The concert was supposed to start at 6.45pm but the mrudangam artist was held up in traffic and the concert eventually started at 7.10pm. She commenced with Nilakantan Sivan's purvikalyani piece and included additional charanams. This was followed by a brief natakurinji and a chaste rendition of the Navagraha kriti in praise of the planet Mercury.
The pre-main alapana was in Shanmughapriya. Dr Rama commenced in the higher registers and introduced some lovely phrases. Swati Tirunal's mamava karunaya was the chosen kriti with neraval and swaram. She was in full flow of kalpana swaram but faltered with her final korvai. To her credit she joined back to the kriti without much fuss.
The main piece was a superb Bilahari. The alapana was something special and hard to describe in words. It was apt that Najeevadhara followed, with its flowing sangatis. She sang the kriti with the full energy it deserves. There was no neraval here but the swarams were beautifully sung. This was followed by a brief tani by JV and BP.
MSN Murthy closely followed the main artist. His Shanmughapriya was very sweet. Mrudangam was good but the soft nadam we are used to from J Vaidyanathan was missing due to either a bad microphone or bad sound settings.
I recommend you listen to a concert of Smt Rama if you can.
