Re: Bombay Jayashri @ KGS 21/12/11
KGS is not my usual haunt but I wandered out to hear one of the few concerts she is singing this season. And it was worth the wander. Varnam was lilting. Begada was lovely start to finish. This composition of Thyagaraja was beautiful and she sang Neraval alternating between 2 lines of the Charanam. Then picked up the swarams for the pallavi line 'Nee vera Kula Dhanamu, Nee vera Jeevanamu'-all went to highlight the beauty of the sahityam even for a non-Telugu. Thodi was laid out in all its splendour. Her voice had also mellowed 'just right' for an emotive neraval @ Soumitri Thyagaraju' followed by swarams. Thani was very effective and suited the mood of the concert. In fact, I heard Manoj Siva and HN Bhaskar play for Ranjani-Gayatri last week. Like able playback singers, their styles for the 2 vocalists was so well-adapted.
After the traditional and heavy fare and nearly an hour of Thodi, RTP in almost a light-weight raga Desh was a perfect choice. But neither the ragam, nor the thanam or the pallavi were light, by any means. Bhaskar replied beautifully in the thanam-not that he didn't in the rest of the concert!
Great concert.

This is the first report of a Jayashri concert I'm seeing this season. Please do tell us your thoughts on the concert as well.
Interested to hear about the Desh RTP, what with all the recent talks of Hindustani and Carnatic raagas etc.
EDIT: I don't know how I missed your second post! Anyway, good to hear that it was a nice concert.

MV: Just curious. Why isn't KGS one of your usual haunts? I think it is a very good sabha for listening to music, if you can get past the snarly T Nagar/Panagal park traffic. I also hear that daily tickets are very unreasonably priced.

@squims, thats alright. You got in before I put my second post in. @pvs, you are probably right. I couldn't decipher my own lovely scribble and I don't have my Thyagaraja book here to refer. @ Mahavishnu..Hello, I gather you are in town. Nothing against KGS. Most of my family is in the Adyar area and I'm not familiar with Chennai. Not comfortable travelling by myself to T.Nagar. Also, all streets and shops look similar, I wouldn't know if I was coming or going!!
