Sanjay at MA - Utterly satisfying

Post by fuddyduddy »

One of his best concerts I have heard! Hope someone will post the detailed song list. Some of the highlights for me :
1. Best version of pullum silambinagaan - shankarabaranam (todays thirupaavai)! Very pleasing sangathis.
2. Wonderful time management - seemed very unrushed and easy thru-out!
3. Violin for kapi RTP excellent
4. Ganamoorthe - vivadhi raaga placement in the song list is always Sanjay's expertise.. I felt like i wanted some vivadhi raaga song then and there it was!
5. Anandavalli in Neelambari was ooh la la!
5. Mannupugazh - I felt like I wanted to hear this song in the end and there it was!

Well, a very satisfying concert for me. Just one thing that kinda bothered me was the kapi RTP alapana which seemed to hit a few cinematic tones and other gimmicks during swarams!

What ever happened to 'Oho Kaalame'? Dont hear it anymore!

Overall loved the concert...

Indeed, it was very satisfying till #6. I had to step out half way through alapana for the Kapi and came back when he was wrapping up Hamir Kalyani tanam (duty beckoned :(). Thankfully no ragamalika swaras . Such a wonderful concert and there had to be two drishti pottus - the last avartana of swaras in Kapi - sowkyam was totally lost at sea and drowning crying for some to come rescue it. Don't know why Sanjay suddenly took that path when the path so far had been serene, calm and classic. Tani - it was explosive on ones ears, literally. Accompaniment was very good till then no blasting away but in Tani it was too loud but last of interesting patterns though.

Artistes were - Sanjay Subrahmanyan (vocal), S Varadarajan (Violin), B Harikumar (Mridangam), V Mohanram (Ghatam)

Anandavalli - is it patterned after Amba Neelambari?

Sanjay , has once again demonstrated that adhering to a musical convention and exploring possibilities within that framework is the best way to produce excellent music !

Happy was the singer who sang with absolute abandon and joy ; happy were the listeners who soaked into soul-satisfying music presented with all the creative dimensions , without unnecessary twists and turns !!!!

Sanjay was at his usual best. This was really one of the best concerts this season. It was 100% entertainment, from the first minute. 100/100 to Sanjay.

A most satisfying concert. A special day at MA. NSG's memorable concert in the morning had nArAyana gowLai which Sanjay sings often (Sri rAmam).

@fuddyduddy: completely agree about the violin alapana for kapi. his ragam was out of this world. flawless is the word. be it his glides or his fast phrases. 4 session of claps for the entire alapana speaks for itself. varadarajan is a complete violinist IMHO.

@CRama: sringaralahari? whose song is that? any links?

the kapi rtp was great. was hoping he would sing the barathiyar song after the pallavi in his normal customary style but was not to be.

I suppose it is a composition of "Lingaraja Urs" one of the prominent Mysore Composers.
sangeethapriya should have some renditions.Sometime back i have seen one rendition by Nedunuri garu.

I have also heard Sreevalsom J Menon sing this as a main item some time.

The best part of this song was Sanjay holding breath at shadjam for more than 25 secs..( i realised after a couple of seconds and this is only my approximation..) there was a thunderous applaud in between the concert.

This was the first time I heard Sanjay holding breath and it was indeed the highlight of the show !!
