Flashback:It is almost 5 to 6 years since I wanted to hear this musician. Trichur V R Dileep Kumar was always talked about by few of my co rasikas who dont participate in this forum. Also from our forum there were few forumites from Bangalore who talked about Dileep. I certainly did download few recordings of Dileep from sangeethapriya and I was impressed and longing to hear him.
Fast Forward: When Kutcheris.com website was published , the first name I looked was him and he had only one concert in KamakOti hall.If I miss him this year , possibly I have to wait for another year .Decided to go for his 2 hour afternoon concert despite being a working day.
Dileep is the disciple of Mangad Natesan (Mangad is in kerala near kollam), who is the disciple of SSI.

Few Highlights:
-------------------
# One of the best first impressions that u can get from any musician is undoubtedly voice . Dileep has a fine pitch , very masculine , a slight bit of karakarapppu like Shri TVS , but overall there is lot of aesthetic appeal irrespective of the song tempo
# I entered late to miss sArangA varnam, but I was lucky when I entered he just began one of the best early numbers for a concert , the rAga being shri ranjani and the krithi being Buvini dAsudanE , his school is well known to sparkle with these racy numbers and he indeed did , the swaras could have been more
# The reportoire and song selection was exquisite , a number each for every vageyakkara was his unwritten rule I guess. Moved from a racy shreeranjani to a melodious vilambit neelAmbari and bangarU ammA was right there in a lovely rendition.
# The submain was gamakakriyA and the alAp had few starting problems in terms of his imagination , but as he picked up it was lovely. The rare kAsi visAlakshi was rendered very well not as great as one of my childhood favourite santhAnam but it was pretty good , his rendition did not mutilate the lyrics . swaras were well done.
# atAnA was a dampener , he had a problem of adjusting to a right zone and the mridangist also did not appear well set . But the day belonged to his timber rich , rightly chiseled mOhanam . Brighas were beautiful and the swara patterns had a nice canvas of patterns , the krithi a rare one rA rA Rajeeva .I heard last year from maha ramachandran and Dileep was quite close to the baritoned ramachandran in presenting mOhanam. The only neraval in the concert was in mohanam and it was balE balE.
# Tukkadas were just one and it was in paTdeep an emotive rAga that competes with madhuvanti, sumanesaranjani and it did stand tall and Dileep sang a bhajan ,in general I see a lot of Hindustani touch and that is good as there is bit more shruthi adherance . I think the last patdeep had a padmanabha mudra and hence assuming it is Swati and it was a real gem.
# Accomponist violinist was a mixed bag , her replies in alapanA had a bit of western touch in both main and submain but overall good. The percussion was good for sound, but more rollls would have been better. The ghatam artist had more knotty variations than the mrudangist.
# In general a very satisfying concert , Dileep has a wonderful voice and sowkhyam in his presentation. I felt very touched with my first experience of his. If there is anything that is immediately disappointing is in general his poor marketing of he as a musician. IN chennai for kerala based artists , in general I see a lot of Keralites from chennai attending for malabar based musicians. He did not have that exclusive crowd and there were about 25-30 rasikas in his concert@kamaKoti hall despite the crt was free and the canteen is pretty good. But I was alone and at peace with the right AC hall, best acoustics and a crowd that did not disturb each other, it was notable for fairly intense classicism .Incidentally this is dileep's only crt in this season. Glad I heard 2 years back it was salem shriram, last year Sangeeta swaminathan, this year so far Dileep and rajasimhan, all rare mahAnubavulus for sure
.
Overall a very good to excellent concert for 1 hour and 50 mins.Looking forward to hear him more frequently.

There are some concert recordings of this artist available in sangeethapriya.org.
Indeed excellent concerts and most of them contain good krithi selection and excellent renderings.
