Re: Amrita Murali, Music Academy
It was a great concert by Amritha.
As usual, the kritis were all sung beautifully, with special mention for parimaLa ranganAtam. Her mukhAri was solid and she granted my wish by singing a neraval at kanulAra sEvinchi. While her shankarAbharaNam was also good, from a musical perspective, her choice of neraval line was not particularly appealing to me - it sounded pretty flat.
Her suruTTi RTP was the highlight of the concert. Crisp alapanai, beautiful madhyama kAla tAnam, and an intelligent pallavi (she did trikAlam and tiSram too).
Her singing is always so classical, and looking at her MA concert lists the last two years, it would be difficult to believe she delivers so much in a two hour post-prandial slot! Indeed, she packs a lot of punch with her madhyama kAla singing.
For the second year in a row, Ranjani Ramakrishnan was listless. R. Shankaranarayanan once again impressed with his azhuttam, and the tani he and Chandrasekara Sarma shared was short and energetic.

Few comments
- Amrita was short of confidence, probably a bad throat? She lost control when reaching higher octaves
- Ranjani's accompaniment was good
- Sankaranarayanan was off colour and no enthu, no support for him from ghatam artist too
- General opinion -Though artists showed individual brilliance at few places, concert on the whole was not worth remembering

@mahesu - i am very sorry but i feel otherwise on a few points. amrita i dint feel was short on confidence. maybe a bad throat-yes. but its the season and we have to give atleast that to the artists. sankaranarayanan was apt in places, though his volume/fast speed could have been lesser. the ghatam artist chandrashekhar sharma made good. i hear it is hard to find good clay pots but the one that he had was in perfect shruthi. it felt so nice to just listen to a perfectly tuned clay pot for a change. a very satisfying concert.
